## Two-Year D.El.Ed. Part-I Examination : 2021-2023 ### ENGLISH (L-2) **Paper Code : CPS-02** **Time Allowed-3 Hours** **Full Marks-70** **The figures in the margin indicate full marks. Candidates are directed to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable.** ### 1. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions: Ten miles south-east of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, on the Susquehanna river are a couple of elongated islands, called Three Mile Island (TMI-2). This site became the focus of the worldwide attention and alarm in 1979 due to an accident in one of the two units of the nuclear plant situated there. In the early morning of Wednesday, March 28, 1979 a pump supplying feed water to TMI-3's system generator suddenly tripped. The time was exactly 36 seconds past 4 a.m. Events beginning 14 seconds after the pump "trip" led to what was the worst nuclear accident till the "record" was broken recently at Chernobyl near Kiev. Improper training, faulty control panel design, negligence during routine maintenance, a series of faults in back-up safety systems and instrumentation, wrong decisions, misinterpretation of data and confusion were pinpointed as culprits by the Kennedy Commission set by President Carter to probe into the accident. A total melt-down of the reactor was averted and the accident was finally brought under control- four days later. Radiation escaped when officials had to vent radioactive xenon, krypton and radon gas into the atmosphere to relieve pressures and when they dumped contaminated water into the Sasquehanna river even though in regulated qualities. A serious health hazard indeed existed for about a week after the accident leading to an evacuation of residents living within 10 miles of the plant. And now we have the plant mishap at the nuclear plant at the Chernobyl in the Soviet Ukraine, 130 km north of Kiev. The Chernobyl disaster is reportedly the worst in the nuclear history and escaped radioactive radiation threatens the health of millions of the people not only in the Western Soviet Union but also in the other parts of Europe. The reactor core at the Chernobyl is also reported to have melted and seeped into the ground. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be made public. TMI and Chernobyl are testimony to the fact that whatever may be the design of the fail-safe systems accidents can and do happen. While accidents at thermal or hydro-electric power stations may be disastrous, the public at large is not affected. Mishaps at nuclear plants on the other hand may be catastrophic for the large section of the general population. ### A. Tick the correct alternative. Write only item number.
