The production of copper in India is concentrated in regions like Tamil Nadu (Tuticorin), Gujarat, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli (Silvassa). Vedanta Limited was created post the Scheme of Amalgamation and Arrangement (Group Simplification Scheme) of Sterlite Industries (India) Limited, The Madras Aluminium Company Limited [MALCO], Sterlite Energy Limited [SEL] and Vedanta Aluminium Limited [VAL] with Sesa Goa Limited [SGL]. Sterlite Copper represent the Copper business of Vedanta Limited. The Copper business of Vedanta Limited (Sterlite Copper) is well-positioned in the key core sector industries, has a strong track record of performance. Sterlite Copper operates a 400,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) Copper Smelter with associates facilities such as Refinery and Copper Rod Plant, Sulphuric Acid plant of more 12,00,000 MTPA and a Phosphoric Acid of 220,000 MTPA at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Develop downstream industries in line with Tamil Nadu Vision 2023. 3.3 Company History Sterlite Copper Ltd. has a rich and dynamic history, tracing its origins back to its incorporation as Rainbow Investments in 1975. A year later, the company underwent its first rebranding as Sterlite Cables in 1976, marking its initial focus on the cable industry. In 1986, it was renamed Sterlite Industries, reflecting its evolution and expanding 12 operations. By July 2000, the company restructured, focusing exclusively on its metal division, encompassing copper and aluminum production. In 1994, Sterlite Industries made a significant move by acquiring the Madras Aluminium Company (MALCO) for ₹55 crores. This acquisition strengthened its foothold in the aluminum sector. The company further diversified its portfolio by acquiring a 55% stake in India Foils for ₹50 crores, giving it a commanding 65% share in the aluminum foil market. Sterlite expanded its global footprint in 1999 with the acquisition of the Copper Mines of Tasmania, cementing its presence in the global copper market. This was followed by a strategic acquisition in February 2011 when Sterlite Industries purchased the Lisheen Zinc Mine in Ireland for $546 million, further diversifying its operations into zinc mining.
