The genre originated in New York City in the 1970s as a cultural exchange among Black, Latino, and Caribbean youth and has grown into one of the most consumed genres of music in the United States. RAP (MCING) Stands for Master of ceremonies gained its moniker from Jamaica. MCs are in charge of entertaining the audience by delivering rhymes in a rhythmic manner. DJ Disk jockeying is the moniker given to those who are capable of creating new music using previously recorded songs, music, noises and similar sounds. B-BOY A street dance that began in New York City that displays complicated floor work, often involving spinning and contorting. ELEMENTS OF BREAK DANCING / B-BOYING TOPROCK- refers to shuffles and upright dancing DOWNROCK- used to describe floor-based footwork dancing FREEZE- includes poses into their dancing sets to provide punctuation to certain beats. POWER MOVES- the most striking acrobatic moves that are usually in circular motions. BASIC HIP-HOP STEPS POPPING- popularized by Sam Solomon a.k.a. Boogaloo Sam in which the dancers tightens and relaxes their muscles to produce jerk-like movements that are usually rhythmic. BASIC HIP-HOP STEPS LOCKING- a.ka. “campbellocking” as it was invented by dancer Don Campbell in 1969 in Los Angeles, California. It is distinguished by its different stops. BASIC HIP-HOP STEPS KRUMPING- a newer king of urban black dance that is free-flowing, expressive, and invigorating. BASIC HIP-HOP STEPS TUTTING- a unique way of producing right- angle geometric forms with your body parts. It is based on postures that people were drawn to during the ancient Egyptian era. BASIC HIP-HOP STEPS SHUFFLING- the Melbourne shuffle a.k.a. rocking is an underground rave and club dance that began in Melbourne, Australia in the 1980s. The movements are a quick heel-and-toe action with a style that may be adapted to many sorts of electronic music. BASIC HIP-HOP STEPS WAACKING- is an African-American street dance that originated in the underground club scenes during the disco era of the 1970s. It is done with stylized posing and rapid synchronized movements to the beat of music. MODERN DANCE Is a theatrical dance that began to develop in the United States and Europe in the 19th century, receiving its nomenclature and a widespread success in the 20th. It evolved as a protest against both balletic and interpretative dance traditions of the time.
