Introduction to Histology and Cell Structure By Prof. Dr: Hala El-Haroun The Cell 3- The cell Coat (glycocalyx): It is a layer of glycoprotein or glycolipid, on the external surface of the cell membrane. It plays a role in immunological specificity , contains blood group antigens , has receptor sites, holds the cells together, shares in the formation of the basement membrane of epithelial tissues & acts as a protective mechanical barrier. Cell Membrane Specializations: 1- Apical Surface: Microvilli (Brush border): are finger-like the brush border of kidney projections of epithelium (approximately 1 um in length) that extend into the lumen & increase the absorptive surface area. They comprise proximal tubule cells and the striated border of the intestinal absorptive cells. They contain a bundle of about thirty actin filaments longitudinally arranged in the core of microvilli. Cilia, are present on the surface of respiratory tract epithelium to push particles or fluids in one direction.
