CURRENT TRENDS IN DENTISTRY FUTURE OF DENTAL CARE: TRENDS AND TECHNOLOGIES DRIVING THE FIELD OF RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY TORRES / JULIAN / CLARIÑO / VILLANUEVA CURRENT TRENDS This is one of those moments where you may have to suspend belief for a moment. You may have to enter a ‘what if’ world, where science achieves the impossible and dentists can do things you never dreamed possible. FIBERREINFORCED COMPOSITES (FRCs) Fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) are a relatively new class of materials used in restorative treatments. This is used in restoring carious lesions or replacing a missing tooth FIBER-REINFORCED COMPOSITES (FRCs) DIGITAL FIBER OPTIC TRANSILLUMINATION IMAGING This new dental technique combines a fiber optic tool with a digital camera to improve cavity detection. It uses near-infrared light instead of harsh white light, allowing for safe, painless exams. This method is more sensitive than X-rays, especially for catching early cavities, and lets dentists store and analyze images for better diagnosis. HEALOZONE Healozone is a new type of advanced technology that enables dentists to target tooth decay with ozone. The Healozone is applied directly to the tooth in a period of 20 to 40 seconds. The application of the ozone kills the bacteria and gives the tooth added minerals. Self-adhesive Composites Self-adhesive composites promise simplified application and reliable adhesion to dental hard tissues without prior conditioning or application of an adhesive system. Curodont™ Protect Anti-cavity Dentifrice Gel for Sensitive Teeth A remineralizing dental gel that aids in the prevention of dental cavities and builds increasing protection against painful tooth sensitivity. Chemo mechanical Caries Removal Chemo mechanical caries removal (CMCR) uses chemical agents to soften the dental tissues before eliminating infected tissue. This solution causes the partial disintegration of the collagen in the cavity, accelerating the removal of dental caries DIAGNOdent DIAGNOdent is a laserbased device that helps dentists detect tooth decay (cavities) in its earliest stages, even before it might show up on traditional x-rays. ADVANTAGES DIAGNOdent Type of Light: Uses a safe, lowenergy laser light. Detects very early cavities that might not show up on xrays. Quantifies decay with numerical readings. success rate of 90% DIAGNOdent DISADVANTAGE Less accurate for certain types of decay Can be affected by stains or some restorations. DIAGNOdent DENTAL AIR ABRATION Microabrasion Drill-less technique that is being used by some dentists to remove early, small areas of tooth decay and to perform other procedures. DENTAL AIR ABRATION Microabrasion ADVANTAGES Air abrasion generates no heat, pressure, or vibration. Air abrasion sometimes reduces the need for anesthesia, particularly if the cavity is shallow. Air abrasion leaves more of the healthy tooth tissue behind. DENTAL AIR ABRATION Microabrasion DISADVANTAGES Air abrasion is not necessarily free of pain. Air abrasion is not recommended for deep cavities (those close to the tooth's pulp) or for cavities in between teeth. DENTAL AIR ABRATION Microabrasion DISADVANTAGES If hard enamel needs to be removed to access the decay, this cannot be done with air abrasion. Crowns, onlays, and inlays cannot be prepared using air abrasion. DENTAL AIR ABRATION Microabrasion ENAMEL MICROABRASION BEFORE AFTER Simply a cosmetic dentistry procedure that helps to whiten your teeth. ENAMEL MICROABRASION BEFORE ADVANTAGES Minimally Invasive Effective Stain Removal Improves Surface Texture Quick and Painless Can be Combined with Other Treatments AFTER ENAMEL MICROABRASION BEFORE DISADVANTAGES Limited Applications Sensitivity Not always a Permanent Solution Results May Vary AFTER ENAMEL MICROABRASION DENTAL AIR ABRASION VS MICRO ENAMEL ABRATION NEWLY IMPROVED LIGHT CURE ADVANTAGE It can cure composite filling even with thick increments It is safe for the Pulpal Health Operator can adjust the intensity of the light DISADVANTAGE Expensive Limited Supply TheraCAl ADVANTAGE Calcium release stimulates! hydroxyapatite and secondary dentin bridge formation? Alk&ine pH promotes healing and apatite formation Significant calcium release leads to protective seals Protects and insulates the pulps Moisture tolerant' and radiopaque can be placed under restorative materials and cements. DISADVANTAGE A disadvantage of Theracal is that it may cause a higher degree of pulpal inflammation compared with other calcium hydroxides and calcium silicates because of the presence of the acrylic monomer bis-GMA present in the material, according to an August 2015 article in the Journal of Endodontics. Newly Enhanced Color Green Caries Indicator easy to remove Caries detector dyes (CDDs) have been used during visual inspection of carious dentin to increase the objectivity of color evaluation with the naked eye. Some studies have reported CDs to be useful in overcoming the difficulties inherent in classical techniques used for identifying and removing carious dentin to ensure acceptable clinical excavation by reliably staining irreversibly demineralized dentin infected with bacteria without staining uninfected dentin. However, other studies reported that the use of CDDs may result in excessive dentin removal because the dyes are unable to discriminate between bacterially infected and uninfected tissues so that partially demineralized dentin that is devoid of bacterial infection may be inadvertently removed. Matrix Systems Circumferential matrices - is a revolutionary new circumferential matrix system. It is indicated when a Class II cavity preparation extends beyond an interproximallingual or interproximal-buccal line angle. A traditional circumferential matrix is a band held in a Tofflemire retainer. The advantages of a Tofflemire retainer are that it is reusable and the position of the band may be easily customized within the retainer. Another option is a circumferential matrix system that has the band preloaded in the retainer for even greater efficiency. Sometimes the location or weight of the retainer can impede the positioning of the matrix band. In this case, a retainerless matrix band may be used. Matrix Systems Sectional matrices - is the best way to achieve a strong contact point in Class II restorations with composite resin in the posterior dental sector. They come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different interproximal spaces. The primary advantage of sectional matrices is their ability to maintain a consistent space between teeth during the restoration process, ensuring proper contact between the teeth and the restoration. This helps in achieving a better fit and esthetics for the patient. Conclusion Innovations in dentistry are changing the way people think about dental visits. With new technologies and products, dental procedures are becoming more comfortable, efficient, and less intimidating for patients.
