EARTH SCIENCE Presented By :GROUP 4 ROCK EXPERIMENT THULITE ROUGH ROCK - THULITE ROUGH ROCK IS A NATURALLY OCCURRING, UNPOLISHED FORM OF THE MINERAL THULITE, WHICH IS A VARIETY OF ZOISITE THAT CONTAINS MANGANESE. - When manganese is incorporated into the zoisite structure, it forms thulite. THULITE IS OFTEN MOTTLED WITH WHITE CALCITE AND OCCURS AS 2 VEINS AND FRACTURE FILLINGS. MINERAL COMPOSITION: * Zoisite: The primary mineral. * Manganese (Mn): Incorporated into the zoisite structure, giving thulite its pink to reddish hue. 3 Physical Characteristics: Hardness: It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively hard and durable. * Color: Primarily known for its pink to reddish coloration caused by the presence of manganese * Streak: The streak of thulite is typically white. 4 Uses: - Ornamental and decorative uses such as jewelry, carvings and sculptures, and tumbled stone. * Thulite is typically found in metamorphic rocks. 5 Phyllite rock formed by the slate that is further metamorphosed so that the coarse-grained mica attain a preferred accommodation. 6 Minerals * Graphite, Sericite, Chlorite, Muscovite, or Translucent Coarse Grain White Mica, Quartz and Plagioclase. Dominant mineral: * It composed of mainly flake-shaped mica minerals. These micas give phylite its dark color and a silky or shiny luster 7 Physical Properties * Color: Phyllite is gray, black or greenish color and frequently weathers out of a tan or brown. * Texture: The texture of phylite is fine-grained, foliated and well developed schistocsity. * Hardness: 1-2 on Mohs scale, also has a good fissility. Uses It is also sometimes used in construction and landscaping due to its durability and 8 aesthetic qualities. Rough Green Quartzite Quartzite is a hard metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz sandstone. Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure usually related to tectonic compression. Mineral Composition The mineral composition of quartzite is predominantly quartz (quartz content in the rock reaches 88-98%), with iron hydroxides (2-3%), silicon and chalcedony (4-5%). The stone also contains impurities of mica, talc, feldspar, and other minerals. 9 Physical Properties * Color: Pure quartzite is typically white or light gray, but impurities can impart a wide range of colors, including pink, red, yellow, blue, green, and orange * Hardness: Ranking 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. * Texture: Quartzite typically has a grainy, sandpaper-like surface, but it can also exhibit a glassy appeara or a more granular texture on the degree of metmorphism. 10 Uses: It works great for rock gardens, decorative pieces, and aquariums. 11 THANK YOU Presented By : GROUP 4
