IMPERIAL [email protected] www.facebook.com/iiskaryote SAINT THOMAS BECKET ACADEMY, INC. (Formerly: Academia de Regina, Inc.) Opening Prayer Oh Lord, help us in our work today, give us concentration so that we may listen, understand, and have a peaceful mind. May we live up to our motto, Cristo et Doctrinae, and may we always remember that Jesus Christ is always with us. Help us to become courageous witnesses of Christ’s faith. Saint Thomas Becket, pray for us. Amen. G11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE POLARITY OF MOLECULES AND ITS PROPERTIES SAINT THOMAS BECKET ACADEMY, INC. (Formerly: Academia de Regina, Inc.) POLARITY Polarity refers to having a dipole, that is, a positive and a negative end. Polarity is dictated by the distribution of electrons in the molecule; either the electrons are equally distributed or unevenly scattered throughout the molecule. G11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE POLARITY OF MOLECULES AND ITS PROPERTIES SAINT THOMAS BECKET ACADEMY, INC. (Formerly: Academia de Regina, Inc.) POLARITY Molecules can be classified as polar or nonpolar. Polarity is a physical aspect of a molecule that affects and influences the behavior of a molecule. Generally, the polarity of a molecule can be predicted from its shape G11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE POLARITY OF MOLECULES AND ITS PROPERTIES SAINT THOMAS BECKET ACADEMY, INC. (Formerly: Academia de Regina, Inc.) POLARITY When electrons in a polar covalent bond are unequally shared between two bonded atoms, it causes partial positive and negative charges. One example of this is hydrochloric acid, where electrons are more concentrated on the chlorine atom, being more electronegative than hydrogen. This separation of the charges is responsible for its polarity. G11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE POLARITY OF MOLECULES AND ITS PROPERTIES SAINT THOMAS BECKET ACADEMY, INC. (Formerly: Academia de Regina, Inc.) POLARITY Dipole moment is a quantity that describes the polarity of a bond in a molecule. In more complex molecular shapes, if the dipole moments do not add up to zero or do not cancel out, a net dipole moment is present, making the molecule polar. A polar molecule results when a molecule contains polar bonds in an asymmetrical arrangement. Examples here are bent (H2O), trigonal pyramidal (NH3), T-shape (ClF3) G11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE POLARITY OF MOLECULES AND ITS PROPERTIES SAINT THOMAS BECKET ACADEMY, INC. (Formerly: Academia de Regina, Inc.) POLARITY If the dipole moments do cancel out, the molecule is nonpolar. Carbon tetrachloride, CCl4 is one example. Even if the C-Cl bonds are polar, their tetrahedral arrangement allows the bond dipoles to cancel each other. Other shapes under this category can be symmetrical linear (CO2), trigonal planar (BF3), square planar (XeF4). CLOSING PRAYER Oh God, we offer you our works and endeavors, our failures, and successes. Grant us that we may remember what we have learned today. Thank you for all the people who have been helpful to us and forgive us for our shortcomings. Give us the courage to follow always the path of truth and help us to be better persons tomorrow. Help us to become courageous witnesses of Christ’s faith. Saint Thomas Becket, pray for us. G11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE FORMATION OF ELEMENTS AND STELLAR FORMATION
