English 7 Unit 1 Vocabulary 1. Metaphor- a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn't literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. 2. Diversity- the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds. 3. Crew- a group of people who work closely together. 4. Ritual- a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order. 5. Apocalypse- an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale. 6. Misfit- a person whose behavior or attitude sets them apart from others in an uncomfortable way. 7. Apparently- as far as one knows or can see. 8. Hierarchy- a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority. 9. Drafty- cold and uncomfortable because of currents of cool air. 10. Stoop- a small porch or the stairs leading up to a front entrance of a house. 11. Impression- an idea, feeling, or opinion about something or someone. 12. Chameleon-a person who changes their opinions or behavior according to the situation. 13. Daunt-make (someone) feel intimidated. 14. Concussion-temporary unconsciousness or confusion caused by a blow on the head. 15. Offensive-causing someone to feel deeply hurt, upset, or angry. 16. Aggressive- ready or likely to attack or confront. 17. Associate- connect (someone or something) with something else in one's mind. 18. Escalate- become or cause to become more intense or serious. 19. Mime- the theatrical technique of suggesting action, character, or emotion without words, using only gesture, expression, and movement. 20. Hors d’oeuvre- any of various tasty foods usually served as appetizers. 21. Mainstream- the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts. 22. Kwanzaa- a secular festival observed by many African Americans from December 26 to January 1 as a celebration of their cultural heritage and traditional values. 23. Notorious- generally known and talked of. 24. Arugula- a yellowish-flowered Mediterranean herb (Eruca vesicaria sativa) of the mustard family cultivated for its foliage which is used especially in salads. 25. Prestige- widespread respect and admiration felt for someone or something on the basis of a perception of their achievements or quality. 26. Drone- to talk in a persistently dull or monotonous tone 27. Thorn - a sharp pointed spine or prickle on a plant or branch. 28. Rebels- people who oppose or defy the government that exists. 29. Shrouded- covered, hidden or wrapped 30. Mortar- Small, portable cannons that fire explosive shells 31. Tribe- group of people related by blood or marriage or customs and traditions. 32. Artillery- weapons for discharging missiles; large caliber guns. 33. Daze- overcome as with astonishment or disbelief 34. Strides- Walks with long steps 35. Inhabited- lived in; occupied 36. Akimbo: with hands on hips and elbows turned outward 56. Relentless: unyielding in severity or strictness; persistent. 57. Desolate: feeling or showing a sense of emptiness or loneliness 58.
