DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT OF ROAD DESING VEHICLES Yatendra Rawat 2023BPLN001 Table of CONTENT Scope Definition Dimensions Weight SCOPE The Standard shall be applied in designing all road elements except culverts and bridges, the latter being governed by the IRC Bridge Codes. Single unit For purposes of this Standard, three types of commercial vehicles have been recognised Semi-trailer The selection of the vehicle type for design of a road would depend upon Truck-trailer combination terrain conditions, economic justification, importance of the road and similar other considerations As a general guide, roads in steep and mountainous terrain need not be designed for truck-trailer combination and may only be designed for single unit vehicle. Axle An axle is a rod or shaft that rotates the wheels and supports the weight of your vehicle. Gross Weight The weight of a vehicle and/or vehicle combination without load plus the weight of any load thereon. Length, Overall The total longitudinal dimension of any vehicle or combination of vehicles, including any load or load-holding devices thereon. Height, Overall The total vertical dimension of any vehicle above the groui. surface including any load and load holding device thereon. Width Overall The total outside transverse dimension of a vehicle including any load or load holding devices thereon, but excluding approved safety devices and tyre bulge due to load. VEHICLAS TYPES TYPE - 2 TYPE - 3 TYPE 2- S1 TYPE 2 - S2 TYPE 3 - S1 TYPE 3 - S2 TYPE 2 - 2 TYPE 3 - 2 TYPE 2 - 3 TYPE 3 - 3 The Figure shows the outline of the vehicle types covered by this Standard. The first digit indicates the number of axles of the truck or truck-tractor. The letter "S" indicates a semi-trailer and the letter immediately following an "S" indicates the number of axles on the semi- trailer. 2-S2 combination is a two axle truck-tractor with a tandem-axle semi-trailer. combination 2-2 is a two-axle truck with a two-axle trailer. WIDTH No vehicle shall have a width exceeding 2.5m. LENGTH Single unit truck/bus having two or more axles, shall be 11/12m. 11/12 M length of a truck-tractor semi-trailer combination, exclusive of front and rear bumpers, shall be 16 m. 16 M length of a truck-trailer combination, exclusive of front and rear bumpers, shall be 18 m. 18 M WEIGHT Single axel weight single axel Dual wheels(10.2 t) Single wheels(6 t) Tandem axle weight Two axel (18 t) Maximum Permissible Gross Weight Define maximum permissible gross vehicle weight. means the maximum permissible weight of a wheeled vehicle,including the weight of its driver and any other person on board, and any load carried on it or by it, transmitted to the road at any given moment through all the wheels of the wheeled vehicle.
