Lusabia, RMT, MSMT(CAR) Expected Learning Outcomes 1. identify the meaning of root word, prefixes and suffixes commonly used in medical terminologies; and 2. use correctly commonly used prefixes and suffixes of medical terms in medical practice. Introduction ◦ Most medical terms are derived from Greek and Latin words ◦ A medical term has 3 parts the root word, the prefix, suffix Root Word The root word is the main part of the medical term that denotes the meaning of the word. Example: ◦ Colo - colon ◦ Phlebo - vein ◦ Hemat - blood ◦ Aero - air Prefix The prefix is found at the beginning of the term it shows how meaning is assigned to the word. Example: ◦ a -/an - without, absence ◦ Hyper - meaning increased/above ◦ Poly - many ◦ Pre - before Suffix Suffix is found at the terminal portion or at the end of the term. It also denotes the meaning to the root word.
