Rasul Communication skills Fall Semester Week 6 2024-2025 Outline ◦ Introduction ◦ Conditions for effective group ◦ Principles of group work ◦ working in a group. ◦ Conditions for effective group development. ◦ Tuckman’s five Stages of Group Development Objectives  Define groups  State characteristics of group work.  Identify three essential conditions for group effectiveness.  Identify five stages of group development One of the key elements of healthcare practice is the ability to work in a team. Introduction ‘A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable’ Is Teamwork needed in healthcare?  Teamwork is needed wherever multiple individuals with multiple skills are required to work INTERDEPENDENTLY to achieve a favourable outcome.  This means that teamwork is absolutely critical in the management of sick patients.  Healthcare is a complex activity which needs many different kinds of professionals such as physicians, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, surgeons, physiotherapists, nutritionists, etc.  One individual working ALONE cannot achieve the target of healing a patient.  A team is therefore absolutely necessary. Referring specifically to healthcare teams, Prosser (2005) considers that effective teams have: a clear sense of purpose and direction openness as a key characteristic a balanced membership performance as their main focus of attention an effective leader who adopts an appropriate leadership style. Conditions for effective group development Research demonstrates that three conditions must be met for effective group development: and there must be a sense of group efficacy, a belief that the group can and will group members must trust a sense of group identity perform well, that the one another; must be present; group as a whole performs better than individuals working on their own. PRINCIPLES ‘The ability to work effectively with a group of other people, either as a leader or member, is an important interpersonal skill’ Effective communication increases ability to provide good-quality care, and enhances learning potential. Key Elements of Effective Teamwork Communication Importance of clear, open communication. Tools for effective communication (e.g., SBAR technique). Collaboration Examples of successful collaborative practices. The role of shared goals in team success. Role Clarity Defining roles and responsibilities. Avoiding role confusion. SBAR technique GROUPS Where a hierarchy exists, a partnership is essential in order to enhance the quality of communication. When we join a group, there is a need to feel accepted, to feel able to communicate openly and honestly, to express our needs and to receive empathetic understanding about what these needs are.
