Concerns? Questions? Cold and Flu What is a Common Cold? A cold is a virus that affects the upper respiratory tract. Occurs through September to May There are 200 different viruses that can be linked to the common cold! What is the Flu? Its a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza There are three types, Influenza A, B, C Can cause mild to severe illness lasting from a week to 10 days Commonly occurs from October to May (flu season) The highest number of cases happens between December and February 1 BILLION Cases of influenzas worldwide 650,000 Deaths worldwide 12,000 Hospitalizations in Canada Flu Symptoms Fever Cough Muscle Aches and Pains Chills Fatigue Headache Sore throat Loss of appetite Runny or Stuffy Nose Nausea and Vomiting Cold Symptoms Stuffy/Runny nose and sneezing Sore throat Cough Headache Body aches Chest discomfort Fatigue How long are you contagious for? Its spread from person to person through droplets (e.g. saliva, sneezing) can be spread by touching objects and surfaces that have the virus on it (e.g. doorknobs) Can survive in the air for several hours Can live on surfaces for up to two days How to prevent the spread of these viruses Wash your hands often, using plenty of soap and warm water. Cover your mouth when you cough, and sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your sleeve or elbow, not your hands. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth to keep germs from entering your body. Get exercise regularly Reduce or cut out alcohol consumption Stay hydrated Get proper sleep: 7-8 hours each night If you become sick, stay at home.
