2/3/24, 2:20 PM OneNote Nursing Theory. Wednesday, January 10, 2024 11:39 AM History of Nursing Theory. Began with Florence Nightingale holds the title of the “mother of modern nursing”, set nursing on a path of scientific advancement, nurses were educated at a time when women nor employed in public service, 1850’s, nursing knowledge was distinguished from medical knowledge, opened a school of nursing at St. Thomas’ hospital in London. The transition from vocation to profession is described here in successive eras of history as nurses began developing a body of specialized knowledge on which to base nursing pr era toward the goal of specialized knowledge for nursing practice demonstrates the seriousness of this drive toward professional development. Curriculum Era: 1900-1940 What content should nurses study? During this era, an emphasis was on what courses nursing students should take, with the goal of arriving at a stand Standardized curriculum for diploma. Research & Graduate Era: 1950-1970 What do nurses research & their roles? Developed graduate education. more nurse leaders embraced higher education and came to an und scientific age and the research path to new nursing knowledge. Nurses began to participate in research, and research courses were included in nursing curricula in early graduate Master’s degree programs in nursing emerged across the country to meet the need for nurses as specialists for clinical practice. Theory Era: 1980-1990’s Theories guide nursing research & practice. There are many ways to think about nursing. The prevailing nursing paradigms (models) provided perspectiv practice, research, administration, and further theory development. Classifying nursing models as paradigms bordered by the metaparadigm concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing systematically united nursing theoretical works for systematic classification positioned theoretical works in a larger context and improved comprehension of nursing knowledge development, greatly facilitating the growth of nursi Theory Utilization Era: 21st century Nursing theory guides research, practice, education & administration, created middle-range theory. A theory/ Theoretical framework. A notion or an idea that explains experience, interprets observations, describes relationships & suggests outcomes (Smith, 2020). Like lenses. They help us know what we know & what we need to know (Parsons, 1949) Mental patterns or frameworks created to help us understand & create meaning from our experience, organize & articulate our knowing & ask questions leading to new insights It gives guidelines to care for patients. It’s a framework. Why do we need a framework: produces knowledge for quality care. We use theory in a practical manner applying framework and seeing what can be done differently at another time. We all have different lens on how we see and do things. The significance of the Nursing Theory Nursing theories address the phenomena of interest to nursing; human beings, health, caring in the context of the nurse, person relationship. Provides rationale for their practice & criteria for evaluating outcomes. All professional disciplines have a body of knowledge consisting of theories, research & methods of inquiry & practice. They organize knowledge, guide inquiry to advance science, guide practice & enhance the care of patients. Nursing Theories influence 3 areas: Education: knowledge Research: enlightenment Clinical Practice : more research and adjustment will influence clinical practice(practical nursing). Is Nursing a Discipline, Profession or Trade? We are a discipline (D) & profession (P)- not trade, D & P are interrelated Nursing theory is significant for both the D & P of the profession A Discipline: is specific to academia & refers to a branch of education, a dept. of learning or a domain of knowledge A Profession: refers to a specialized field of practice, founded on the theoretical structure of the science or knowledge of that discipline & accompanying practice abilities Why does Nursing Theory Matter? Nursing theory should provide the principles that underpin practice & help to generate further nursing knowledge however there are challenges here. 1. Not all nurses are familiar with nursing theorists & the purpose 2. The science on nursing theorists is relatively young, < 50 years old 3. Has had academic links & not practice links Theories are important as they allow nurses to understand how different aspects of health & illness affect each other- nurses have to understand the connections to provide trea patients. https://yuoffice-my.sharepoint.com/personal/ife20_yorku_ca/_layouts/15/Doc.aspx?sourcedoc={bf93dbc4-cdec-494f-8064-58e33247d86a}&action=edi… 1/3 2/3/24, 2:20 PM OneNote https://yuoffice-my.sharepoint.com/personal/ife20_yorku_ca/_layouts/15/Doc.aspx?sourcedoc={bf93dbc4-cdec-494f-8064-58e33247d86a}&action=edi… 2/3 2/3/24, 2:20 PM OneNote https://yuoffice-my.sharepoint.com/personal/ife20_yorku_ca/_layouts/15/Doc.aspx?sourcedoc={bf93dbc4-cdec-494f-8064-58e33247d86a}&action=edi… 3/3
