**CHV 3 GA 3 REVIEWER Lesson 5** **The Greatest Commandment: Love as a Moral Commandment (The Human Person Called to Serve)** ============================================================================================ **WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY?** **WHAT DOES A DIGNIFIED EXISTENCE MEAN IN TERMS OF LOVING/ SERVING?** **KABANALAN NG PAGIBIG:** **The Human Person Called to Serve** What kind of love do we need, unconditional or conditional? **Unconditional Love vs. Conditional love** A balance of unconditional and conditional love serves growth in the first half of life **\"I believe that the healthiest people are those who received** from their two parents and early authority figures **a combination of unconditional love and conditional love.** This seems to be true of so many effective and influential people, like St. Francis, John Muir, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Mother Teresa. I know my siblings and I received conditional love from our mother and unconditional love from our father. We all admit now that Mom\'s demanding love served us very well later in life, although we sure fought her when we were young. And we were glad Daddy was there to balance her out.\" **What is unconditional love?** - - \"FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONE AND ONLY SON, THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE\" - The **Bible** Tells Us That **God\'s Love** Is An **[Agape Love (unconditional)]**. The Greatest Love Of AIL Deus Caritas Est ---------------- In this encyclical, **Pope Benedict XVI** - wrote that Jesus is the ultimate example of lOVE. **\"His death on the Cross is the culmination of that turning of God against himself in which he gives himself in order to raise man up and save him.\"** God loved humanity first, and in loving our neighbors we demonstrate our love for Him **Agape love** means you are not responding to a particular individuality of a person but to his dignity as a person, as imago Dei. **Agape** - is the kind of love that Jesus commands us to show to our neighbor. **CONDITIONAL LOVE** - can be defined as just that-love with conditions. This means that your love for another person, or another person\'s love for you, is contingent on certain actions, or things going on. Examples: \"I will date you if you take me to prom\" \"I will love you if you buy me this ring\" \"I will stay with you if you don\'t take that job\" **THE DIFFERENCE** ------------------ Unconditional love holds a feeling of acceptance and safety. People who experience unconditional love feel **secure** in their relationship and feel **comfort** in knowing that even if they struggle or misstep, they will always have a safe place to fall back on for support. Whereas, in conditional love, people oftentimes feel a lack of stability and trust. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | **Unconditional love** | | | | - - - - - - - | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ **Conditional Love** - - - - - - - **LOVE IS A MORAL COMMITMENT** \"LET ALL THAT YOU DO BE DONE IN LOVE.\" - \- 1 CORINTHIANS 16:14 - In the life of the believer, **love** is an act of the will: we choose to relate to God and to other persons in a loving way no matter how we may feel. - **Christian love =** simply means that **we treat others the way God treats us.** - In His love, God is kind and forgiving toward us, so we seek to be kind and forgiving toward others **(Eph. 4:32).** - God wills the very best for us, so we desire the very best for others, even if it demands sacrifice on our part **LOVE IS A MORAL COMMITMENT IN COURTSHIP AND MARRIAGE** Speaking biblically \"love\" is not merely an emotion, a pleasant disposition toward another person, but **covenant commitment demonstrated in actions that seek the interest of the next person**\...Just as in marriage true love is demonstrated not merely or even primarily by roses and verbal utterances of \"I love you,\" but in **actions that seek the well-being and delight** of one\'s spouse **Courtship** ============= For a Christian, is a relationship between a man and a woman in which they seek **to determine if it is God\'s will for them to marry each other.** Under the protection, guidance, and blessing of parents or mentors, the couple concentrates on developing a deeper friendship that could lead to marriage, as they discern both their readiness and God\'s timing for such a marriage. ### **What if my courtship \"failed\"?** If, during the courtship, one or both parties realize that marriage is not God\'s will and they end the relationship, the courtship has not \"failed.\" On the contrary, the courtship was successful, because God gave the direction that was sought through the courtship process. ### **Trust in God** Although **the termination of a courtship most likely will be painful,** the damage and hurt which can lead to bitterness can be avoided. Both parties, as well as their families and all the people who love them, should continue **to trust in the Lord and accept the grace**. He gives to deal with any disappointment or unfulfilled hopes. **MARRIAGE** ------------ - The state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. The **purpose of marriage** is primarily mutual help and guidance (Eph 5:23- 25), physical and spiritual fulfillment and the prevention of immorality (1 Chr 7:1-7). - The marital relation should be an intense relation on the spiritual and physical terrain. - Husband and wife become one flesh and this means that two people **share in each other\'s lives in a complete and dedicated manner**. - But marriage is more than sexuality. Marriage implies a deep spiritual relation because it is a triangular relation between man, wife and Christ (Eph 5:21-33). **Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics** There are 7 norms of Just Love according to **Margaret Farley:** ### **7 Norms of Just Love** **1. Do No Unjust Harm** - **2. Free Consent** - **3. Mutuality** - **4. Equality** - **5. Commitment** - **6. Fruitfulness** - **7. Social Justice** -
