Introduction to Emerging Technologies Emerging Technologies CHAPTER ONE 1 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Objectves: Develop knowledge about the era of industrial evolutions Identify the technological advances that made the industrial revolution possible Analyze the changing conditions created by the industrial revolution Describe the technological innovations that spurred industrialization Identifies the programmable device Develop general knowledge about emerging technologies 2 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Introduction to Evolution of Technologies ❑ Emerging technology: The term commonly refers to technologies that are currently developing, or that are expected to be available within the next five to ten years. ❑ Usually reserved for technologies that are creating or are expected to create significant social or economic effects. ❑ Technological evolution is a theory of radical transformation of society through technological development. 3 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Cont.. Technology: Originally referring to grammar from tekhno (see techno) + -logy. The meaning "science of the mechanical and industrial arts“. Evolution: the process of developing by gradual changes. This noun is from latin evolutio (stem evolution), “an unrolling or openning” a derivative of the verb ēvolvere combined from the prefix e-, “out”, plus volvere, “to roll”. “to roll out or away”. 4 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Cont.. List of some currently available emerged technologies : Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things (IoT) Blockchain Intelligent Apps (I-Apps) Augmented Reality and Big Data Virtual Reality Robotic Processor Cloud Computing Automation (RPA) DevOps 5 Introduction to Emerging Technologies The Industrial Revolution (IR) Period of industrialization and innovation. During late 1700s and early 1800s. Occurred when a society shifts from using tools to make products to use new sources of energy, such as coal, to power machines in factories. It was a time when the manufacturing of goods moved from small shops and homes to large factories. Began in Britain in the 18th century due in part to an increase in food production, which was the key outcome of the Agricultural Revolution. 6 Introduction to Emerging Technologies The Industrial Revolution (IR) cont’d People started moving from rural areas to cities to work. Generally the following industrial revolutions transferred the world into modern society: The steam engine (replaced water and animal power, coal was used to produce it) The age of science and mass production The rise of the digital technology Smart and autonomous systems fueled by data and machine learning 7 Introduction to Emerging Technologies The Industrial Revolution (IR) cont’d The four types of industries are: The primary industry involves getting raw materials e.g. mining, farming, and fishing. The secondary industry involves manufacturing e.g. making cars and steel. Tertiary industries provide a service e.g. teaching and nursing. The quaternary industry involves research and development industries e.g. IT. 8 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Industrial Revolution (IR 1.0)-1760 Included transition from hand production methods to machines, The increasing use of steam power, The development of machine tools and the rise of the factory system. 9 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Industrial Revolution (IR 2.0)-1870 Also known as the Technological Revolution Introduced electrical power and telephones. Mass production with the help of electrical power( making car & steel) & vast movement of people and enhancing communication. 10 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Industrial Revolution (IR 3.0)-1950 Also known as the Digital Revolution Transition from mechanical and analog electronic technology to digital electronics. The core factors of this revolution: the mass production and wide spread use of digital logic circuits and its derived technologies such as the computer, handphones and the Internet. (eradicated physical presence) 11 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0)-2016 Advancements in various technologies such as robotics, Internet of Things, additive manufacturing and autonomous vehicles. A cyber-physical system- a mechanism monitored by computer- based algorithms & tightly integrated with the internet and its users. Adoption of AI 12 Introduction to Emerging Technologies The Industrial Revolution (IR) cont’d The Most Important Inventions of the Industrial Revolution are:- Transportation: Steam Engine, Railroad, Diesel Engine, Airplane. Communication: Telegraph, Transatlantic Cable. Phonograph, Telephone. Industry: Cotton Gin, Sewing Machine, Electric Lights. 13 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Role of Data for Emerging Technologies Data is regarded as the new oil and strategic asset since we are living in the age of big data, and determines the future possibly everything in our world today and tomorrow. Presents enormous challenges that in turn bring incredible innovation and economic opportunities. 14 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Enabling devices and network (Programmable devices) In the world of digital electronic systems, there are four basic kinds of devices: Memory : devices store random information such as the contents of a spreadsheet or database. Microprocessors: execute software instructions to perform a wide variety of tasks such as running a word processing program or video game. Logic: devices provide specific functions, including device-to-device interfacing, data communication, signal processing, & data display etc... 15 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Cont.. Network: is a collection of computers, servers, network devices, peripherals, or other devices connected to one another to allow the sharing of data. Example is an Internet (connects millions of people). 16 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Cont.. Programmable devices usually refer to chips that incorporate field programmable logic devices, complex programmable logic devices (CPLD), and programmable logic devices. Eg:- Computer 17 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Cont.. List of some Programmable devices: Actel’s Achronix Speedster SPD60 Lattice Semiconductor’s ECP3 Silicon Blue Technologies Xmos Semiconductor Cypress Semiconductor’s programmable system-on- chip (PSoC) family Etc. 18 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Cont.. A full range of network-related equipment referred to as Service Enabling Devices (SEDs), which can include: Modems Routers Switches Conferencing equipment Network appliances (NIDs and SIDs) Hosting equipment and servers Traditional channel service unit (CSU) and data service unit (DSU) 19 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Human to Machine Interaction Human-machine interaction (HMI) refers to the communication and interaction between a human and a machine via a user interface. HCI consists of three parts: the user, the computer itself, and the ways they work together (Network Hardware). 20 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Human to Machine Interaction Cont’d The goal of HCI is to improve the interaction between users and computers by making computers more user-friendly. The main advantages of HCI are simplicity, ease of deployment & operations and cost savings for smaller setups 21 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Human to Machine Interaction Cont’d Desciplines contributing to human- computer interaction: Cognitive psychology Computer science Linguistics Engineering and design AI Human factors 22 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Emerging technology trends in 2019 5G Networks Artificial Intelligence (AI) Autonomous Devices Blockchain Augmented Analytics Digital Twins Enhanced Edge Computing and Immersive Experiences in Smart Spaces 23 Introduction to Emerging Technologies Some Emerging technologies that will shape the future of you & your business Chatbots Virtual, Augmented and Mixed reality Bloakchain Ephemeral Apps Artificial Intelligence 24 Introduction to Emerging Technologies End Of Chapter One 25
