LEARNING OBJECTIVES Chapter 8 The Cellular Basis of Reproduction & Inheritance Upon completion of this chapter, the student will demonstrate mastery of the following objectives along with the related vocabulary. 1. Define cell division and explain the purposes of cell division. 2. Compare and contrast the aspects of asexual and sexual reproduction. 3. Describe a prokaryotic chromosome and describe the stages of prokaryotic cell division or binary fission. 4. Describe the structure of a eukaryotic chromosomes. Define chromatin and sister chromatids. 5. Define cell cycle and list the stages in the eukaryotic cell cycle. 6. List the phases of interphase and describe the characteristics of each phase. 7. Define mitosis and karyokinesis. List the phases of mitosis and describe the characteristic events of each phase. 8. Compare cytokinesis in animal and plant cells. 9. Discuss the cell cycle control system and the three checkpoints it contains. Explain G0 phase. 10. Explain how cancerous cells are different from healthy cells. Define benign, metastasize, and malignant. 11. Define somatic cell. Discuss chromosome number in a typical somatic cell, to include homologous pair, autosomes, and sex chromosomes. Define locus. 12. Define life cycle and gametes. Distinguish between haploid and diploid cells and include the haploid and diploid number for humans. Explain the process of fertilization and the resulting zygote. 13. Briefly explain the purpose of meiosis. 14. List the phases of meiosis I and II, describing the characteristic events of each phase. Define tetrad and kinetochore. 15. Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis, noting both similarities and differences. 16. Explain the three ways genetic variation is produced in sexually reproducing organisms, independent orientation, random fertilization, and crossing-over. Define non-sister chromatids and chiasma. 17. Define karyotyping. Explain how and why karyotyping is performed.
