Intercultural Renaissance of Communication Native Culture INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Tourism and hospitality facilitate mobility, allowing different social groups, nationalities, and cultures to meet and interact. This interaction can help remove social or national prejudices, promote better understanding, and drive positive social change. Cross- cultural communication between tourists and hosts can lead to changes in local culture while preserving or revitalizing local ethnic and cultural identities. The quality of these interactions is crucial as it fosters mutual understanding. RENAISSANCE OF NATIVE CULTURE Tourism and hospitality are crucial in preserving host countries' history and culture. In Eastern and Western Europe, traditional folk customs and costumes are preserved, while model cultural centers and model culture villages revive native traditions and crafts. These environments stimulate local awareness and allow visitors to observe and participate in cultural activities. NEGATIVE CULTURAL IMPACT OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY While tourism and hospitality have helped restore and maintain interest in local cultures, they have also led to the destruction of cultural heritage. Local residents often resent tourists who feel entitled to their country’s art, whether bought or stolen. Tourists persuade natives to sell traditional objects, leading to the loss of family heirlooms and the destruction of archaeological sites and monuments in places like Egypt, Bali, India, and Central America. POSITIVE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY Moreover, the increasing demand for artifacts has altered their form and function: 1 Mass production due to increased demand results in a loss of careful and precise workmanship. 2 The impersonal nature of the tourist market decreases the spiritual relevance of the artist’s work. Art is produced according to the taste of tourists, often 3 leading to caricatured representations, such as in Africa. POSITIVE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY Moreover, the increasing demand for artifacts has altered their form and function: Even model cultural villages may encourage cultural loss. Tourists’ 4 need for entertainment and tight schedules leads to shorter, less authentic activities, diminishing cultural value. Large hotels and cultural villages may manipulate traditions to fit tourists’ schedules and tastes, leading to commercialism and the loss of local values. Additionally, the architectural designs of most international 5 hotels often reflect Western styles, showing little appreciation for local social traditions. POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY Tourism and hospitality have raised environmental awareness by exposing people to scenic areas and promoting the preservation of natural resources. In developed countries, national parks and monuments have been established to preserve natural and cultural resources for future generations. Developing nations recognize the value of their monuments and the potential for tourism and income. Tourists now seek unspoiled natural attractions in developing nations, such as lighthouses and harbors. This has led to increased appreciation for the environment and increased tourism in scenic areas like Switzerland. CONSERVATION Conservation and preservation of the environment benefit local residents and tourism. National parks in East Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania protect wildlife and maintain quality. Tourism and hospitality stimulate rehabilitation, resource efficiency, aesthetic enhancement, and human protection, ensuring a satisfying tourist experience. DEVELOPMENT OF ATTRACTION Various countries are developing attractions to attract tourists, such as underwater national parks in St. Croix, high mountain areas like Jungfran in Switzerland, and historical sites like Intramuros in the Philippines, Jamestown, and Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. These efforts preserve natural wonders and provide quick access to outdoor activities for both locals and tourists. Additionally, tourism and hospitality development benefit local residents by promoting conversation and preservation, and allowing free access to coastal resorts for tourists and locals. NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY Exceeding carrying capacity can lead to environmental damage, attraction destruction, and declining tourism. Developed countries have more control due to cultural differences and resources. Environmental conflicts include vegetation destruction, pollution, and wildlife damage. Geological conflicts involve tourism affecting geological formations, while resident conflicts arise from hotel development, traffic congestion, and pollution. Careful management is needed to mitigate the significant impact of tourism on the environment, wildlife, and local communities. IMPACT OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY ON CULTURE Tourism and hospitality increases the acculturation process as well as the cultural convergence of people. Acculturation is defined as those changes that occur in a culture through borrowing from other cultures. These changes may include technology, language, and values. Cultural convergence is the tendency of world cultures to become more alike. A very good example of this is the adoption of many European ways by people of less-developed countries because of their exposure to European culture and technology. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY The history of tourism and hospitality closely shows that the environment has contributed to the birth and progress of tourism and hospitality. The term "environment" Connotes both human and physical characteristics Speakers and writers often refer to an human environment, physical environment, or a combination of both. A term that describes the human and physical characteristics of an area is pre-existing forms It is expected that some change in pre-existing forms will be necessary to accommodate mass tourism. However, tourism and hospitality can either be carefully controlled by the government to maximize economic and employment opportunities while reducing its social, cultural and physical impact; or it can be changed to enhance the physical environment and make it more attractive to both the guest and the local residents.
