Chapter 1 What are the contents of the chapter 1 Introduction Statement of the problem Objectives Significance of the study Scope and delimitation Definition of terms What is the purpose of chapter 1 Chapter 1 is the very first chapter of your study Therefore, it must be able to explain to the reader the overall scope and purpose of your study TIP: When doing technical writing never put the pronouns I, You, Me, We INTRODUCTION An introduction in technical writing should be different from an introduction of a story, essay or poem. When creating an introduction never use hype or inappropriate words/phrases such as “have you ever wondered, As a matter of fact, isn’t it amazing, Once in a faraway land, etc…” as this are used for introduction for fancy and sci- fi stories not for technical writing. So how do we create an introduction for thesis? The introduction for technical writing must be highly based on the title of the study The introduction must explain and expound the title of the study Sample introduction Title: a proposed new urbanism layout for the municipality of Minglanilla as a preparation for urban growth Intro: in creating the intro you must explain and expound important words in the title such as “what is new urbanism” and describe the “characteristics of Minglanilla” and as well as defining what “urban growth” means. an introduction therefore is a detailed description of your title Sample intro New urbanism is an urban model created by Peter Calthorpe and company, the goal of new urbanism is to achieve preservation and revitalization of the urban realm with great consideration of the users and its environment. Minglanilla is a municipality in cebu that is progressive however lacks the proper urban planning developments resulting in the municipality to be considered as the worst traffic congested city in Cebu, and also having a low GDP as compared to different cities and muncipality. Urban growth is an effect of continuous progress in a city or municipality. Urban growth in minglanilla has been poorly executed and has no developments addressing it based on the yearly report from the LGU. So if you have noticed, the introduction really is a longer version of the title it only expounds each important items in the title To be able to make a good intro, you should be doing preliminary research and you shall already be putting some of the data in the introduction Do not put your own opinion or your views about a topic or data in the introduction (ex. Based on my experience minglanilla is progressive but lacks infrastructures) but rather only put facts and data STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Also known as the Main problem The statement of the problem indicates what is the main question in your research that you wish to solve The statement of the problem is again highly based from the title Just convert your title into a question form Sample statement of the problem “How to fully integrate new urbanism in minglanilla considering its current planning issues” We simply converted the title into a question. SUB PROBLEMS Sub problems is a sub category of the statement of the problem These are questions that we need to ask to be able to arrive at our main problem Minimum of 5 sub-problems Ex: main problem – How to become an architect – Sub-problem 1- what are the available options to attain a degree in architecture – Sub-problem 2- What are the requirements for a degree in architecture – Sub-problem 3- What are the schools offering architecture Sample sub-problem How to fully integrate new urbanism in minglanilla considering its current planning issues – What are the existing urban planning issues of minglanilla – What are the different zoning classifications of minglanilla – What are the existing proposals for minglanilla in the year 2021-onwards – What are the standards of new urbanism applicable to minglanilla OBJECTIVES One of the easiest part of the chapter 1 You simply convert your Main problem and Sub problems into objects, by removing the question format and usually putting the term “To + verb” Therefore the number of objectives shall match the number of problems Ex: problem – what is the population – Objective – To identify the population Sample objective Main Problem :“How to fully integrate new urbanism in minglanilla considering its current planning issues” Main objective :“to fully integrate new urbanism in minglanilla and to consider its current planning issues” SUB OBJECTIVES Are similar to sub problems Same as the main objective just convert your sub problems into sub objectives – SUB PROBLEMS – SUB OBJECTIVES – What are the existing urban – To gather data on the existing planning issues of minglanilla urban planning issues of – What are the different zoning minglanilla classifications of minglanilla – To identify the different zones in – What are the existing proposals minglanilla for minglanilla in the year – To gather data on the 2021-onwards population of minglanilla – What are the standards of new – To identify all the proposals for urbanism applicable to minglanilla in the year 2021 - minglanilla onwards SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This indicates the importance of your study, therefore create a main significance of the study and add different proponents who would benefit the study Ex. “The new urbanism proposal for minglanilla shall improve the overall image of the municipality and improve the welfare of its people” – To the people of minglanilla The people will benefit to a much user oriented urban planning – To the LGU of minglanilla The LGU of minglanilla shall be able to provide better service to the people as their work environment is better – To the local business in minglanilla Several zones for commercial establishments will be opened thus creating more opportunities for small business SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS This is the part of chapter one indicating what is included and not included in your study Scope – is the coverage of your research such as the types of data you will be gathering the types of output you are expecting Delimitation – is the limits of your research not because of your personal weakness in doing the research but because of technical concerns that hinder you from doing such scope Sample Scope and delimitations “the study will focus on data pertaining the population growth, the business growth and development growth in minglanilla and will not be taking data on income growth. The study shall expect output such as a physical plan of minglanilla showing the integration of the new urbanism, including detailed site development plans, electrical layouts, and sanitary layouts. The study will not provide a detailed estimates of the development. The study is bounded for 4 months from June 2021 until November 2021” DEFINITION OF TERMS This part of chapter one writes down the different terms that are jargon ad technical to the public but will also include normal terms that has a specific meaning to your study Arrange the terms alphabetically Ex: jargons/ technical terms – Gentrification, Urban Blight, (you may define them based on the dictionary) Ex: normal terms with specific meaning – Mayor, City, Plan (do not define it based on the dictionary but define it based on how it is used in your study, ex.”Mayor- as used in this book shall mean the mayor in minglanilla”) Sample definition of terms City – as used in this book shall mean the city of minglanilla Gentrification – as used in this book shall mean the process the poor urban area is improved replacing its occupants Mayor – as used in this book shall mean the mayor of minglanilla in the fiscal year 2021-2022, hon. Elenito Pena Plan – as used in this book shall mean the plan to apply new urbanism to minglanilla
