Cm civilisation britannique 1) Nation and state : INTRODUCTION State: independent political entity with clear geography boundaries Nation: large population that shares the same culture, language, history, tradition. It’s community, cohesion and it’s indivisible. Eg: a nation w/ a state: Kurdish. They are a nation, they share culture, language, and history but the {Kurdistan} is not known as a state. A state w several nations: Yugoslavia. There are many nations such as Serbian, Slovak that shares the same interests in one same state. France is a nation-state, and UK is a multinational states or supranational state. UK is the political term that refers to the union of 4 countries [ home nations] Scotland / Wales / England / Northern Irland. Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK ➔ Historical reasons for the diversity in UK : 600 BC: the celts settled in British island Around 1st BC: the romans colonized a part of Britain (marks the limits b/ Scotland and England) 5-7th C: Germanic tribes migrated in England 8-11th C : Vikings invasion of Britain and Ireland 1066 : the Normans led by William the conqueror invaded England The Normans came from the Vikings. Normans victory at the battle of hasting. The Normans invaded England. The Normans imposed their language and their political system. Then in Wales and the British islands. The key moment which led to the UK : Act of union: The union of the small kingdom: The 1st step was in 1536 when Wales joined the England to form 1 country. In 1707, Scotland joined England and Wales, and it was Great Britain. In 1801 the Ireland joined the Great Britain to form the United Kingdom 1801 – 1922 the all-Ireland, but some part of Ireland didn’t feel a part of UK, but another one felt Britain. In 1922 the Ireland divided into 2 parts: Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland 2) Multiculturalism in the UK Like most European powers after WWII the UK became a cosmopolitan / multicultural nation. “The empire on which the sun never comes down”. 19eme s : ¼ of the population was Britain 1947: India and Pakistan became independent The commonwealth of nation is a free association of about 50 free and equal countries, mostly former British colonies that were keen to maintain ties with the UK. 1973: the UK joined the EU Before Brexit the polish was the 2nd language in the countries.
