SUMMARY CHAPTER 13 WORK LIFE QUALITY AND RELATED ISSUES Quality of work life refers to the favorableness or unfavourableness of a job environment for the people working i an organization. QWL is concerned with taking care of the higher-order needs of the employees in addition to basic needs. The overall climate adjusted to produce more humanized jobs. Issues of QWL are pay and stability of employment, occupational stress, alternative work schedules, recognition, congenial worker supervisor relationship, adequacy of resources and seniority and merit in promotions. Workplace violence is violence or the threat of violence against workers. It may be inside or outside workplace in the form of verbal abuse, physical assaults and homicide. Causes of workplace violence are lack of pre- employment screening, angered workers, customers who feel wronged/ cheated, stressed out employees, conflict between coworkers, personal life, lack of Employee Assistance programs, denial etc. Consequences of workplace violence can be major such as physical attacks, assaults, psychological trauma, anger related incidents, rape, arson and murder or minor such as violent arguments, verbal batting, violation in ethics and rules, sabotage, property damage, vandalism etc. Measures to minimize the workplace violence includes- counseling, diversion of powerful employees towards organizational goals, creation of friendly environment, eliminating psychopath personality or who don’t match to organization culture at the time of hiring and imposing severe punishment to discipline violators. Sexual harassment occurs when one employee makes continued unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, to another employee against his or her wishes. Examples of sexual harassment are discussed. The effects of sexual harassment can be significant physical and mental health problems, financial difficulties and even global repercussions. Measures to reduce sexual harassment such as intolerance to sexual harassment, ant- sexual harassment policy, information, open communication, prompt investigation to deal with any complaint and disciplinary action against violators. Provide protection and support, counseling in sensitive and confidential manner P. 1 Internal Alcoholism and drug abuse can lead to loss of productivity, absenteeism, injuries, fatalities, theft, low employee morale, legal liabilities, and increased compensation costs, high attrition rate etc. Techniques to deal with alcoholism and drug abuse include administering tests to confirm, counseling, training, disciplinary actions and controlling employees by paying their salary to family members.
