DENTAL CEMENTS DR.ADLA AHMED What is DENTAL CEMENT ? A substance that harden from a viscous state to a solid state to join 2 surfaces. A cement acts as base, liner, filling material or luting cement to bind prosthesis to tooth surface. Available as : Powder and liquid. Base and catalyst paste. Premixed capsules. Ideal Requirements: Non toxic, non irritant to pulp tissue. Insoluble. Mechanical properties. Adhesion to enamel and dentin. Bacteriostatic. Optical properties. Thermal, chemical and electrical insulation. Self cure luting GIC Adhesive resin Permanent Luting cement cements Luting cements Resin based cements Self-adhesive resin cement Polymer reinforced ZOE restorative cement ( IRM ) Temporary Luting cements Zinc oxide eugenol Zinc oxide non- eugenol Self cure GIC permanent luting cement Available as : Powder and liquid - Mixed in a ratio of 1 scoop powder: 2drop liquid on a glass slab with a cement spatula. Premixed in a capsule -Activated in an amalgamator. -Dispensed using in applicator. Adhesive resin permanent luting cement These cements typically require a separate primer for bonding to tooth Alloy/ceramic substrates. Used for bonding of most alloy and ceramic restorations, except veneers. Self-Adhesive resin permanent luting cement The steps of etching, priming, and bonding are eliminated. IRM temporary luting cement It is an intermediate restoration material intended to remain in place for no longer than one year. It is also be used as a base under restorative materials and cements that do not contain resin components. Components: Polymer reinforced zinc oxide eugenol. Initial set occurs approximately 5 since the mixing started. Mixing ratio : 1/1 (powder / liquid) Zinc oxide-eugenol (Temporary luting cement) Zinc oxide non-eugenol powder liquid mixed on a glass slab base and a catalyst paste Solution Cavity Liners and varnishes: function as a protective barrier between dentin and the restorative material. Copal Varnish Dentin desensitizers (Block dentinal tubules and hence reduce sensitivity - Used under amalgam restoration) Cement base/liners: are applied in thicker layers beneath restorative materials to provide mechanical support for a restoration and thermal protection for the pulp. Dycal Liner Glass ionomer Base- Liner- Temporary restoration Resin modified glass Base- Liner- Temporary restoration ionomer IRM Base- Temporary restoration- Permanent luting cement Biodentine vital pulp therapy; including pulp capping and pulpotomy In the root, it can be used for repairing root, furcation perforations, internal and external resorption 1- Dycal: 1. calcium hydroxide is the main component 2. Used in deep cavities close to the pulp 3. Comes as 2 tubes base and catalyst 4. Stimulates formation of reparative dentin 2- Glass ionomer cement: Main components: Powder: silicate glass liquid: Polyacrylic Acid used as: o A Base o A liner o A temporary restoration Advantages : 1. Releases Fluoride 2. Chemical Retention {so no micro leakage and ensures good seal} COMES AS : Powder and liquid Mixed in a ratio of 1 scoop powder / 2 drop liquid (liner) Mixed in a ratio of 1scoop powder / 1scoop liquid (base) Mixed in a ration of 2 scoop powder / 1scoop liquid (restorative) Premixed capsule Activated in an activator Mixed in an amalgamator Dispensed using in applicator 3- Resin Modified GIC : Dual cure High fluoride release used as liner used as a base used as a temporary restoration used a permanent restoration in pediatric/geriatric patients Comes as:- Powder and liquid: Mixed in a ratio of 1 scoop powder: 2drop liquid (liner) Mixed in a ratio of 1scoop powder: 1 scoop liquid (base) Mixed in a ration of 2 scoop powder: 1 scoop liquid (restorative) Premixed in a capsule: Activated in an activator Mixed in an amalgamator Dispensed using in applicator 4- Polymer-reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol restorative cement {IRM} Has a sedative property Used as a base under Amalgam Used as a permanent luting cement Used as a temporary Restoration 5- Biodentine Comes as powder and liquid It promotes pulp healing Used as a base or liner Glass ionomers Adhesive resin cement Ketac conditioner Glaze light cure {self cure} varnish Applicator Amalgamator Activator
