FALL 2024 SKILLS & VOCABULARY REVIEW How to make a selections: You can use your magic wand, quick selection, lasso & pen tool Cut something out of a background with a hard edge (like a scissor cut) use 100% hardness Cut something out and feather the edges, change feather selection/modify/feather Cut something out and contract or expand the selection - use selection/modify/contract or expand Make a copy of a layer options: command J, drag layer to bottom sq+ icon or layer, new, copy via layer Nondestructive editing is done with masking layers and appearance layers Destructive editing is when an image layer is permanently edited and the pixel information is changed with out using a layer. Masks in Photoshop are a nondestructive way of editing. Black hides, wide reveals. Add an adjustment layer or adjust a layer using: image/adjustment Desaturated (remove color) a layer - you use image/adjust/hue saturation or add an appearance layer and hue/saturation Add contrast to a layer - you can image/adjust/brightness/contrast or add an appearance layer and /brightness/contrast Change the color mode from CMYK to RGB - easy change under image/mode) Use the warp to wrap or add perspective an object - Edit/transform/warp) Use the image adjust to change the colors a layer Use the ink dropper to choose a color from the file. To combine all the layers when you are finished you can: merge layers or flatten layers, this is will result in a smaller file size. A jpeg will always be a single layer file. Blending Mode at the top of the layers panel is where you can change from normal to multiply or many others Change the opacity of a layer at top of layers panel To edit photographs and remove unwanted items you have these options by replacing the area with other pixels from the file you have these tools: Spot Healing Tool Healing Brush Tool Patch Clone Stamp If you select a background, but you really want the opposite object you, make your selection and then choose INVERSE under the selection drop down menu MASKING LAYERS: Masking layers edit the image by hiding or reveling parts of the image using black, white or gray. You can use the paint brush tool when in the masking layer to determined what area to show or hide. They are a non-destructive way or editing. When using a making layer - black will erase/hide - white will show, gray will partly show or hide. FILE TYPES: Identify the best uses for these files and their definitions JPEG (or JPG) - Joint Photographic Experts Group is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photogra- phy. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable trade-off between storage size and image quality. PNG - Portable Network Graphics A PNG file is an image saved in the Portable Network Graphic (PNG) format. It contains a bitmap compressed with lossless compression similar to a. GIF file. PNG files are commonly used to store web graphics, digital photographs, and images with transparent backgrounds. GIF - Graphics Interchange Format A GIF file is an image file saved in the Graphical Interchange Format (GIF). It may contain up to 256 indexed colors with a color palette that may be a predefined set of colors or may be adapted to the colors in the image. It has a smaller color range. TIF - Tagged Image File TIF is an image format file for high-quality graphics. The ability to store image data in a lossless format makes a TIFF file a useful image archive, because, unlike standard JPEG files, a TIFF file using lossless compression (or none) may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality. PSD - Photoshop file PSD (Photoshop Document) is an image file format native to Adobe Photoshop. It's an image editing friendly format that supports multiple image layers and various imaging options. PSD files are commonly used for containing high quality graphics data. DPI: Dots per inch is a measure of spatial printing, video or image scanner dot density, in particular the number of individual dots that can be placed in a line within the span of 1 inch. 72 - 150 dpi - considered low resolution. Most used for digital applications 300 dpi + - considered high resolution. Most used and needed for print applications. SHORT CUTS: command c - copy command v - paste spacebar - move document hand tool - left and right brackets- to change the size of a brush size command d - deselect or release selections command j - copy of a layer command i - will inverse a selection command t - free transform, rotate, scale -------Layers command g - group layers command e - merge layers command z - undo adjustment layer ------- SMART OBJECTS: Smart Objects are layers that contain image data -------Trash/delete layer ------- -- ------- from raster or vector images, such as Photoshop ----- or Illustrator files. Smart Objects preserve an image's source content with all its original effect masking layer characteristics, enabling you to perform nonde- layer layer copy structive editing to the layer.
