Module 5 Modern Naturopathy for Cancer Video 1: Choosing therapies School of Modern Naturopathy Welcome to Module 5. I'm your tutor Linda Lazarides. In this video I'm going to start with an overview of the many different therapies on offer. I will also look at understanding some psychological aspects and character traits that can interfere with healing. Be absolutely certain that many of the people who have died tried out all kinds of natural anti-cancer remedies and therapies. Social media is brimming with advice to use this or that anti-cancer diet, to fast (water or juice), to meditate, to swallow the latest pills, read the latest book or website, to "detox", clear parasites, buy apricot kernels or just pray. Of course some people do succeed, but 1st person reports of personal survivor success are extremely hard to find. And what survivors or their friends credit the recovery to may not be what they say it was. If you have read that apricot kernels can cure cancer, so you eat apricot kernels and your tumour shrinks, you may tell everyone that it was the apricot kernels that cured you. But you are also following a cleansing diet, took vitamin D, meditated and used liver herbs. You just didn't mention all that. The story spreads and people start telling their friends with cancer to buy the apricot kernels. How many people are actually cured? One in every two people in the West are now being diagnosed with cancer. So if any natural method was even 50 per cent successful, wouldn't we be seeing thousands, if not millions of ecstatic stories all over the internet? I recall reading one book claiming that a particular method would cure all cancers. Only to find that the author (who was not a doctor) diagnosed cancer herself based on a gadget she had invented. She told her clients that they had cancer, sold them some stuff, then pronounced them "cured" when the gadget told her they no longer had cancer. Imagine trusting such a person. How devastating when you had entered the consultation with a simple minor ailment, to be told it was "cancer". The author in question eventually died from real cancer. As you will see, there are dozens of different approaches to natural cancer treatment, none of which offer any guarantees. Of course conventional treatments don't offer any guarantees either, but they rely on statistics and "clinical trials" to declare their superiority. If the tumour is successfully cut out or shrunk by radiation or chemotherapy, patients are not declared to be cured but only "in remission". The disappearance of the tumour is a shiny trophy held aloft by the doctor as proof that the treatment "works". Patients are delighted and relieved. As long as the tumour is gone, they are not concerned that they have been poisoned so severely that all their hair has fallen out, their mouth is full of sores and their digestive system ravaged. But that's not the end of the story. The poison has a hidden barb in its tail. Chemotherapy drugs possess the exact conditions needed to cause more cancer in the future. Both chemotherapy and radiation create cells with decreased respiration capability that can better survive without oxygen; that is to say, these treatments create pre-cancerous cells which can eventually form new tumours that will be resistant to chemotherapy the second time around. The patient doesn't know this, but the doctor does. I will provide a link to the medical article which explains this in more detail. https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Cancer+and+mitochondria+defects%3a+new+21st+centur y+research.-a0206620312 Vitamin C (high doses) Vitamin C megadoses have been studied for their potential to kill cancer cells by stimulating the immune system. Vitamin C is also a good antioxidant. This therapy, first discovered and trialled by Nobel Prize laureate Linus Pauling PhD, has one of the best track records. Despite the awful side effects, most patients are too afraid to reject the conventional treatments, they just want whatever will get rid of their tumour as soon as possible, especially if they have a scarily fast-growing tumour. It's understandable. Of course it is. No matter how many authors publish books on "how I cured my cancer", natural therapies are always entirely experimental. But sometimes there is no time to experiment, only to put yourself in the hands of someone who offers you a definite percentage chance of living longer. So the vast majority of cancer patients will only ever use natural therapies as an addition to their conventional treatments, or, after their conventional treatment is over, in the hope of preventing a recurrence. Each of the patient's friends and relatives has different ideas about what natural treatments should be adopted to "complement" the conventional treatments. Patients try a few things, but it's hard to persevere if you don't see results straight away, because you don't know if you've selected the right therapy. You are working in the dark, not to mention how hard it is to deprive yourself of what you have enjoyed eating all your life. Let's not forget that changing habits can be very daunting. Many smokers can't give up their habit even when they are diagnosed with lung cancer. Unfortunately some patients will not start using natural therapies until after the doctor has declared their condition "terminal" - which means no more conventional treatment is possible. This rarely produces a good outcome. It comes from a mindset of panic, instead of what healing requires: patience, calmness and perseverance. Patients who truly feel they have something to live for, something that truly stimulates their will-power, will have the best chance of survival. Psychologists have known for a long time that those who are the most fearful have the lowest chances. That's one reason why natural therapies can be very powerful. They make the patient feel they are doing something for themselves. Fighting back instead of just sitting back and letting the disease take them over. This is very empowering. This module will teach you how to create a health plan together with your client. You will learn how to explain that before reaching the ultimate goal (such as eliminating the tumour), there are smaller, preliminary goals that need to be accomplished along the way. By doing this, you empower the client to shift their focus from anxiously waiting for medical test results and solely worrying about getting rid of the tumour. Instead, they can focus on a series of manageable steps, each bringing them closer to their overall goal. When the client can see a clear path with several intermediate goals—each one achievable —it gives them a stronger sense of hope and purpose. Eventually, all these paths converge, which means the client is doing everything they can to maximize their chances of success. This approach helps the client feel in control and optimistic about the journey ahead. Unhealthy These traits reduce the vital or life force energy Repressing emotions Overly accommodating Highly susceptible to stress Let's start with the "cancer personality", traditionally thought of as people who exhibit one or more of these character traits: Repressing emotions Overly accommodating Highly susceptible to stress "Experts" will say that there is no such thing as a cancer personality, that all kinds of people get cancer. Of course this is true, but certain traits drain the life force or vital energy, making it harder to fight disease. Healthy These traits increase the vital or life force energy Express how you feel Resist conformity Embrace joy and creativity Expressing how you feel, resisting conformity, embracing joy and creativity These traits increase the life force or vital energy. Let's look at a very important book, which forms the basis of what many holistic cancer centres all over the world are now teaching. Bernie Siegel is a retired surgeon and well-known advocate of the mind-body connection in healing. His most famous book is "Love, Medicine and Miracles" (published in 1986), where he explores the role of positive thinking and emotional healing in cancer treatment and recovery. His most famous piece of advice is to "sing your own song". It's all very well to tell your clients to "sing their own song", but if you have spent your whole life not being true to yourself, you may not even know that you are not being authentic. People who are used to conforming will want to please you, and will say that they understand your recommendations, even when they don't. They will thank you for your advice, never admitting if it causes them immense stress. They will never show the stress. They make light-hearted comments to their doctors about their condition, because they don't want the doctor to be worried about them. They are more concerned about the doctor's feelings than their own. So, as holistic practitioners, where do we start when we want to help someone like this? The link to watch this YouTube video can be found in your additional resources If you want to specialize in cancer therapy, there are courses in the mind-body connection, such as those held at Penny Brohn UK. https://pennybrohn.org.uk/i-am-a-healthcare-professional/ Something that also works at the emotional level and can be administered straight away is a homeopathic remedy. The prime remedy for cancer patients who are overly accommodating is Carcinosin. Carcinosin can help the client be more receptive to regaining their authentic self that was lost in childhood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEV8i5TgNKs Embed code Also extremely useful for emotional balancing are the Bach Flower remedies. Your reading list includes this book. I recommend studying it carefully so that you can start to recognize character traits in your clients that you have read about in the book. Many cancer patients also suffer from depression. After reading this book you will recognize that there are different types of depression, requiring different remedies. For clients who suffer from stress, this book may also help you identify the underlying sources of their stress. You can gain some insights into helping your clients "sing their own song" by asking them what they liked to do as a child. What childhood dreams they had. How they feel about those dreams now. You may be able to re-awaken interests that your client had completely forgotten about. Pursuing those interests in the form of joining a club or a new class is an important part of finding the authentic you, with new joy and a renewed love of life. End of Video 1 In Video 2 we will look at how cancer starts End of Video 1 In Video 2 we will look at how cancer starts. We will compare the current popular view with the old early 20th century naturopathic doctors' view, and finally the modern naturopathic view. Module 5 Modern Naturopathy for Cancer Video 2: How cancer starts School of Modern Naturopathy Welcome to video 2. In this video we are going to look at how cancer starts. The changes that occur in the body which result in the formation of a tumour. Here is the *popular* view of tumour formation. Our DNA gets damaged by something carcinogenic such as pollutants or smoking. Abnormal cells start forming. The immune system fails to seek out and destroy these abnormal cells, allowing the cells to reproduce uncontrollably, forming a tumour. There's not exactly anything wrong with this explanation. The only thing is, it leaves out some steps in the process. It is over-simplified, and does not encourage the patient to think beyond the confines of conventional medicine. Now let's look at how naturopathic doctors in the early 20th century saw the development of a tumour. This diagram shows that 100 years ago, naturopathic doctors like Lindlahr and Powell knew far more about the development of tumours than we give them credit for. They described the process as an accumulation of morbid matter, which basically means anything that poisoned and irritated the terrain (their term for the extracellular matrix that I described in Module 2). The immune system responds to this irritation with localised inflammation. The longer the inflammation continues, the more likely is fibrosis, a scar-like process which hardens the chronically inflamed tissues. Induration means hardening. This results in the formation of a tumour. These doctors believed that morbid matter accumulated because of a reduced ability to eliminate toxins, due to a combination of faulty diet and a deficiency of vital energy - known as Chi in Chinese traditional medicine, and Prana in the Ayurvedic system. Now lets look at the modern naturopathic interpretation. It is not so very different. We can add a little extra detail thanks to the work of Otto Warburg (born in 1883, died in 1970) who discovered that cells become cancerous when they lack oxygen. Oxygen is delivered to our cells by the blood capillaries, so if the blood circulation in an area of tissue becomes restricted by fibrosis, which as I've said is a hardening process, the centre of the hardened tissue will eventually become oxygen-deprived. Without oxygen, normal cells cannot make the energy they need. Oxygen-deprived cells have a choice. They can either die, or change their metabolism to survive without oxygen. This different kind of metabolism is known as fermentation or glycolysis. It allows cells to continue making energy, so they can choose not to die. Unfortunately, this comes at a price. Cells which derive their energy from fermentation are unable to perform normal tasks. Just like yeasts and fungi which survive by fermentation, these altered cells do nothing else except invade, multiply and feed off your body. They are non-functional. These aberrant cells create their own blood supply and ecosystem to protect themselves from our immune system. As they grow and become tumours, they invade surrounding normal tissues and throw out their seeds which settle elsewhere in the body to form secondary tumours. So let's compare the old and new naturopathy diagrams again. We have added the detail about oxygen lack and fermentation to the original naturopathic process diagram. Now let's look at the start of the process. The early naturopaths blamed poor diet and reduced vital energy for the accumulation of morbid or toxic matter. They did not know about antioxidants, the nutrients which help to prevent toxins from damaging our DNA with free radicals, which are highly irritating aberrant oxygen molecules. So we can add antioxidant lack into the equation. They also did not know that another serious source of irritation is the accumulation of mis- folded proteins in our extracellular matrix. Mis-folded proteins can very much be described as "morbid matter". Unfolded protein Folded protein Here is a diagram which illustrates protein folding As you just learned from the video, misfolded proteins play a large part in the development of canc er. Let's look at this now with a different kind of diagram. This diagram shows that mis-folded protein deposits are the missing link between exposure to toxins, and the inflammation, fibrosis and oxygen lack which turn cells cancerous. Of course it's a good idea to do everything we can to minimize these deposits and prevent more from forming. The grey box on the right lists some natural remedies known to be helpful for this. Why am I showing you this diagram? If you show it to clients, it can help them to feel more in control, to see exactly what went wrong with their health. They can see that their cancer didn't just come out of the blue. It can also help motivate them to improve their dietary habits. They can visualise their misfolded proteins being reduced or increased by what they choose to put in their supermarket cart. In the next video we will look at the natural remedies which have been researched as far as preventing and reducing amyloid deposits. Natural approaches to preventing and reducing amyloids Understanding about amyloids and mis-folded proteins will be of greatest interest to clients who want to prevent cancer or prevent a recurrence of their cancer. In addition to improving their diet and using the anti-misfolding foods and remedies, it will be important for these clients to do as much detox as they can, using the methods described in Module 2. Drugs coming out of the body can produce side effects as they come out of storage, so you have to proceed slowly and carefully with someone who has had chemotherapy. Don't make the mistake of trying to do everything all at once. You may come across clients whose relatives have died of cancer. They may come to you for a prevention plan that will give them the best chance of beating their "cancer genes". I have pointed out to people like this, that what they see as a cancer gene could perhaps be a gene that simply makes them more vulnerable to cancer if they are not getting enough preventive nutrients in their diet. Dietary habits run in families too. The thought of genetics is scary because we assume we can't avoid what our genes dictate. So giving your client an alternative view that maybe it's not a "cancer gene" after all, can reduce anxiety. Worrying that every new lump and bump is the expected cancer predicted by ones genes, is not conducive to health. And now for the most challenging cases, clients who have been diagnosed with cancer, but don't under any circumstances want to subject themselves to conventional treatments. Module 5 Modern Naturopathy for Cancer Video 3: Cancer-fighting foods (1) School of Modern Naturopathy Welcome to video 3. In this video we will start to look at what can be done for people who consult us because they have active cancer and they categorically refuse to receive conventional treatment. First there are some legal issues that we have to address before proceeding with this kind of client. It is a prosecutable offence for anyone other than a licenced medical practitioner using official clinical guidelines, to claim to be able to treat cancer. Even if your client appreciates all the advice and information you give, clients can and do still die. If their grieving relatives believe that conventional treatment could have saved them, the relatives may come after you with accusations of criminal behaviour. Grieving people are unpredictable. No matter how ethically you have behaved, they may be looking for a scapegoat. So it is essential to have a legal document proving that you advised the client to seek medical advice, and the client refused. I have included in your additional resources a suggested template form for your clients to sign. Because you are not allowed to "treat" cancer, and natural cancer approaches are officially considered unproven, you also must never give your client direct instructions. You can only show your client information and research findings about natural approaches, and tell your client what cancer survivors did to successfully combat their cancers. If the survivors also used conventional medicine, you must make your client aware of this. It is ok to write an instruction plan for your client, but you must call it a health plan, action plan or something similar. Beware of "googling" to find anti-cancer food suggestions. There is a big difference between foods that prevent cancer, and foods that induce cancer cells to self-destruct (this is known as apoptosis) or stimulate the immune system to kill them. Many people get prevention and treatment mixed up. What prevents cancer does not necessarily shrink a tumour. I'm now going to show details of some important foods which contain ingredients that DO induce apoptosis. Let's start with cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. I will include these slides in your additional resources. Green tea antioxidants are known to help prevent cancer, but they also have the ability to promote cancer cell apoptosis and to reduce tumour size in breast cancer. One of the traditional fasts used by early naturopaths was a six-week grape fast, where patients were asked to eat nothing but grapes for six weeks. Grapes are nowadays one of the most pesticide-contaminated foods in the world, so organic grapes are essential. Whatever methods your clients use, they must find enjoyment in them. I don't recommend stressing your client by suggesting that a fast is any kind of rapid method to reduce tumours. I did once have a client who tried a grape fast, and it did not work for her. To help stimulate autophagy, Intermittent fasting as described in Module 3 can be suggested, and it is not as stressful as a grape fast. If you recall, autophagy is a self-cleaning mechanism where old or damaged parts of your cells are broken down and their component molecules are recycled. And here is turmeric, a rich source of curcumin, which can induce apoptosis and is also protective of the liver and helps to regenerate liver cells. When buying turmeric, look for a source that guarantees it is 95 percent curcumin. I once had a client who ate a teaspoon a day of turmeric while she was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. According to her doctor, she responded unusually well to the chemotherapy. To her doctor's surprise, the tumour shrank to the size of a pea. This lady was very determined to recover completely, and that always counts. Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries have also been found to trigger apoptosis in cancer cells, particularly in oral, oesophageal and colon cancers. A delicious medicine indeed! But for reasons I will explain later, it's not a good idea to add sugar to these berries. If you can't eat them without sugar, then just concentrate on other foods instead. We have known for a few decades that lycopene from tomatoes is especially good at preventing and combating prostate cancer. Walnuts can be crushed and added to many different dishes. They are a good source of protein and healthy oils, as well as having the ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Soy has had some controversy over being labelled as oestrogenic. But when consumed in the form of natural foods like tofu and soy milk, it is considered an oestrogen balancer, and almost all the research studies have shown that it has very positive effects on women with breast cancer. I recommend staying away from highly processed soy foods like textured vegetable protein and soy protein isolate. They have not been shown to have the same positive effect. I have mentioned apoptosis a few times, so now let's take a deeper dive into this incredibly important cancer cell self-destruct mechanism. What you will hear next is a discussion of this research paper. I will also include a link to the paper in your additional resources. PODCAST 2 Breast cancer foods and apoptosis Much of your role with cancer patients will be to help them find foods that fit their budget, and to suggest preparation methods that will help them enjoy those foods. Plant foods can be prepared in all kinds of delicious ways, it’s just a question of finding the right recipes. This enjoyment is a crucial part of the therapeutic process. Be sure to show your client the research summaries about foods and apoptosis. First of all this helps your clients put the right foods in their shopping carts. Secondly, every time they eat those foods, they can imagine their tumour shrinking. This kind of visualisation is a potent disease-fighting technique. Making the patient feel more empowered stimulates the vital force that the early naturopaths talked about, which helps to stimulate the immune system. Don't get too hung up on the science. Clients need a lot of help with learning how to prepare whole, natural foods so that they can enjoy them. In Video 4 we will look at pH, alkaline diets, and starving cancer cells. We will also look at the issue of sugar, insulin and the recent trend to recommend a ketogenic diet. End of Video 3 In video 4 we will look at pH, alkaline diets, and starving cancer cells. We will also look at the issue of sugar, insulin and the recent trend to recommend a ketogenic diet. Module 5 Modern Naturopathy for Cancer Video 4: Cancer-fighting foods (2) School of Modern Naturopathy Welcome to video 4. In this video we are going to look at pH, the alkaline diet, and starving cancer cells. We will also look at the issue of sugar, insulin and the recent trend to recommend a ketogenic diet. Let's start by looking at why the early naturopaths always recommended a plant-based diet and no meat. It would be a whole-food version of course, consisting of natural, unprocessed foods. Meat, fish and eggs form acid residues after they have been digested and absorbed. Eating natural plant foods and restricting the consumption of meat, fish and eggs prevents acidic compounds from collecting in our extracellular matrix and acidifying our blood. Acidity promotes disease. Remember those amyloids we mentioned in video 2 of this module? On the other hand fruit and vegetables are reduced to an alkaline residue. Alkalinity promotes health. So an alkaline diet can be described as a low protein diet, rich in fruit and vegetables. Alkalinity also improves the oxygen levels in your blood, which helps everything work better. Except cancer cells. They don't like oxygen. Restricting dietary protein does something else too. It reduces the activity of a protein complex found in cancer cells, that these cells rely on to survive. This protein complex is known as mTORC1. Listen to Bob and Melissa as they explain the facts. PODCAST 1 Starving cancer cells [Inhibiting mTORC1 activity in cancer cells by restricting dietary protein suppresses their growth, induces autophagy and apoptosis, limits nutrient and oxygen supply by inhibiting angiogenesis, and makes them more susceptible to other therapies. This makes mTORC1 a critical target in cancer therapy.] mTORC1 is a master regulator of numerous processes implicated in the proliferation, metabolism, and growth of cancer cells The protein complex mTORC1 is found in both animal and human cancer cells (the m stands for mammal or mammalian). So personally, I would go right ahead and begin starving cancer cells by cutting down on meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. It's a great shame there is no human research. That's because the research done so far has been funded by pharmaceutical companies looking at ideas for new drugs. There is no profit for them in testing a low-protein diet on humans. Thankfully we can just go ahead and use the information they discovered. So what can you eat instead of meat, that will give you the protein you need? I already recommended walnuts for their ability to promote apoptosis in cancer cells. They are a good source of plant protein. Researchers have discovered a similar effect in beans. We found no less than 15 studies reporting that the lectins in several varieties of edible beans can also induce cancer cells to commit suicide. I have listed all these studies in a pdf in your additional resources. There are many delicious recipes you can make with beans, especially hearty, chunky soups and stews full of cancer-fighting vegetables. Beans and chickpeas are cheap too, especially if you buy large packs of dried beans. After overnight soaking in water, they take only a few minutes to soften in a pressure cooker. Then you can use them as you would canned beans, mashed up or whole, in stews, sauces, curries, and so on. It's extremely important for therapists to give their clients lots of recipe ideas to make their food tasty. Stock and bouillon cubes, condiments like soy sauce and miso, vegan fish sauce, all can enhance flavour and enjoyment. So far we have looked at foods that help to fight cancer. Now for a more sensitive topic: foods to avoid. Sugar is not a whole-food, and has no place in a whole-food, mainly plant-based diet. But there are also some specific reasons for avoiding sugar, particularly that it stimulates your body to produce insulin. Insulin has the job of getting sugar out of your blood and into your cells. Unfortunately both sugar and insulin are loved by cancer cells. Insulin activates pathways which make tumours grow faster. Here once again are Bob and Melissa to explain the facts. Podcast Bob and Melissa Insulin promotes proliferation. Can lead to increased growth of cancer cells, as these pathways help drive cell division and growth. Elevated insulin levels, especially in conditions like insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, have been linked to an increased risk of developing certain cancers (e.g., breast, colon, and pancreatic cancers). High insulin levels may stimulate cancer cells to grow faster. 2. Inhibition of Apoptosis (Cell Death): Insulin signaling can suppress apoptotic pathways, allowing cancer cells to avoid programmed cell death. By promoting survival signals through the Akt pathway, insulin helps cancer cells persist in unfavorable conditions that would normally trigger apoptosis. 3. Increased Glucose Uptake and Metabolism: Cancer cells exhibit a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect, where they prefer to use glucose through glycolysis even in the presence of oxygen. Insulin enhances glucose uptake by upregulating GLUT4 transporters on cancer cell membranes. This increased glucose availability supports the metabolic demands of rapidly dividing cancer cells. Insulin, by stimulating glucose metabolism, contributes to the growth and energy needs of tumors. 4. Activation of mTOR and IGF-1 Signaling: Insulin works in conjunction with insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) to activate the mTOR pathway, which plays a critical role in cell growth and metabolism. This activation promotes cancer cell growth and proliferation. Elevated levels of IGF-1, often seen in individuals with high insulin, are associated with an increased risk of cancer development and progression, especially in cancers like breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer. 5. Impact on Angiogenesis: Insulin can increase the production of factors like VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which promotes the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). This process supplies tumors with the oxygen and nutrients they need to grow, allowing them to sustain rapid growth and metast asis. 6. Resistance to Therapies: Insulin and IGF-1 signaling can also contribute to resistance to certain cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and targeted therapies. By enhancing survival pathways, insulin can make cancer cells more resilient against treatments designed to induce cell death. In summary, insulin can enhance cancer cell proliferation, metabolism, and survival by activating key signaling pathways like PI3K/Akt and mTOR, while also inhibiting apoptosis and promoting angiogenesis. This dual role of insulin in promoting both the growth and survival of cancer cells makes it a significant factor in cancer biology, especially in the context of metabolic disorders like diabetes. Unfortunately white rice and foods made from white flour are little different from sugar. These refined foods also stimulate your body to quickly produce insulin....Mice on the calorie-restricted diet couldn’t get fatty acids from their diet or produce their own. In these mice, tumor growth slowed significantly, compared to mice on the ketogenic diet. The facts about sugar and insulin are the reason why some people are interested in the idea of using a "ketogenic diet" as part of their cancer therapy. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. It was originally developed in the 1920s as a treatment for epilepsy, and is popular now with people trying to lose weight. The interest in ketogenic diets as a cancer therapy arose from research studies using a drug called PIK3 in an attempt to reduce the activity of MTORC1. If you remember, MTORC1 is a protein complex which makes tumours grow. Do we really need a drug for this? Bob and Melissa talked about researchers having discovered that a low-protein diet reduces MTORC1. But these researchers work for companies with shareholders. They cannot spend their time on anything other than drug development to make money for the company. So they came up with PIK3. Unfortunately PIK3 was found to have an inconvenient tendency to raise insulin levels in the patient's body, which negates the effectiveness of the drug. So they came up with the idea of loading up the patients with lots of fat in the form of a ketogenic diet that would not stimulate so much insulin. If you haven't done your homework, you won't know that that this diet is ONLY intended for use with a drug. They hear the words "ketogenic diet" and "cancer" and think they are putting two and two together by assuming this diet is a form of cancer therapy. It isn't. Here is a highly authoritative article from MIT News to show that increasing your fat consumption, as in a ketogenic diet, does not make tumours grow smaller, it makes them grow larger. I will provide the link in your additional resources. Fatty acids are components of fats, also known as lipids. https://news.mit.edu/2021/how-diet-affects-tumors-1020 So it's very clear that the ketogenic diet used as an adjunct to specific cancer drugs should not be used by people seeking natural approaches to cancer. It will have a directly opposite effect from the effect they are looking for. But let's look at the technique of "calorie restriction", which, unlike the ketogenic diet, was actually found to have a POSITIVE tumour-reducing effect. Does this mean we actually have to make cancer patients go hungry? In most cases it’s not really necessary to discourage shallow frying. Coconut oil is the best oil for frying, as heat doesn’t easily degrade it. Extra virgin olive oil (healthier than ordinary olive oil) can be used for frying up to a medium heat. For salads, walnut oil provides healthy cancer-fighting omega 3 oils. It can also be used for baking, but do not use walnut oil for frying. Absolutely not. By following a whole-food mostly plant-based diet, we are already restricting calories. As you learned in module one, almost all the calories in the average diet come from sugar, white flour and saturated animal fat. A bit of shallow-frying in olive oil or coconut oil, or the use of walnut oil in salad dressing, is not going to have any negative effects, and helps to create more variety and flavour in a patient's diet. On top of this, the liberal consumption of mixed bean and vegetable soups and stews provides satisfying nourishment without excess calories. End of Video 4 In Video 5 we will look at In video 5 we will look at nutritional and herbal supplements End of Video 4. In video 5 we will look at nutritional and herbal supplements that have a good reputation for helping to fight cancers. Module 5 Modern Naturopathy for Cancer Video 5: Biofilm Overcoming a monster obstacle to recovery School of Modern Naturopathy Welcome to video 5. This continues the guidance for patients who refuse conventional cancer treatments. As you know, the law does not allow me to write protocols (sets of treatment instructions) for people with cancer, especially for commercial products and supplements, even though I don't sell them. What I can do is tell you the protocol I would use on myself if I were diagnosed with some of the common cancers. I will start with a dietary approach and then talk about how to combat a little-known factor which we have only recently discovered is the reason why our wonderful foods, herbs and supplements have so often not succeeded despite our best efforts. Obviously the very first thing to do is to ditch all the junk food, and focus on a good whole- food, plant-based diet. As you would expect, I do this already. Although not everyone does, I find myself feeling a little anaemic on a 100 percent plant- based diet, so my daily breakfast usually includes one canned sardine on my home-made oat bread. To butter the bread, I use a very good vegan butter which is rich in omega 3 oils, called Naturli. In the United States I would recommend the Earth Balance brand, but let me know if you find anything better! Certainly for the first few weeks of my regime, my other meals would be almost exclusively bean and vegetable-based one-pot meals, especially focusing on cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and broccoli. Fruit is the ideal dessert. It doesn't have to be raw. For example you can have stewed apples and raisins. Video 5a Cruciferous veggies, liver enzymes, estradiol My drinks would be juices and smoothies made from the fruits that we mentioned in the previous videos, which have been shown to help drive cancer cells into self-destruct mode. Plus of course green tea, which is also good at this job. With every sip, it's helpful to say out loud "this drink has healed me, I am now healed". Positive affirmations like this increase what naturopaths call the vital energy, which literally has equal healing power to your foods and medicines. It doesn't matter that you say these words even when you are not yet healed. Say it anyway. Say it with love. It helps to remove the negative thoughts that hinder your progress. For people whose intestines work well, this kind of diet will have a good cleansing effect by producing at least two soft bowel movements every day. Additional cleansing options are given in Module 2, the science of detox. I would certainly use the magnesium ascorbate vitamin C intestinal cleanse routine if I was prone to constipation. In fact vitamin C in high doses has a great track record for helping to beat cancer. I have included some research papers in your additional resources. I would take as many grams a day of magnesium ascorbate as my bowels can tolerate, and I would add a few drops of DMSO to aid its absorption, gradually building this up to a maximum of one teaspoon of DMSO per day. Remember how DMSO was found in a human clinical trial to break down those toxic amyloids that have been linked with cancer development and kidney disease? A magnesium ascorbate and DMSO drink is taken on an empty stomach, several times a day. I sometimes make it with green tea instead of plain water. I always whisk in some psyllium husks to prevent liquid stools. It needs a bit of experimenting to get it right. Biofilm Two individuals personally known to me recovered from metastatic cancer (cancer that has spread from its primary site) by using high dose vitamin C treatment. Vitamin C has extremely good anti-inflammatory action. But there's another path to cleansing that has only recently come to light, and can help vitamin C and all other natural therapies to work better. I'm going to talk about Biofilm. Tumours create their own protective ecosystem. An important part of that ecosystem is known as a biofilm. It's basically a slimy impenetrable cloak that makes the tumour cells invisible to the immune system and resistant to almost everything that tries to attack them. Biofilm is probably the reason why so many people have not had success with their cancer therapies. Biofilm stops the wonderful anti-cancer food ingredients and supplements from getting to the tumour. More about biofilms (text to speech) Biofilms can promote cancer through several mechanisms: (1) Biofilms can trigger inflammation that fails to clear biofilm-associated pathogens. Persistent inflammation can cause DNA damage and promote the growth of cancer cells. (2) Biofilms can modulate and limit the efficacy of our immune system response, creating an environment that supports cancer development. (3) Some bacteria in biofilms can produce toxins functioning as carcinogens, which increase the risk of cancer. (4) Bacteria in biofilms can alter our metabolism. (5) New evidence increasingly suggests that bacteria within what is known as the tumor microbiome, are involved in cancer progression. Biofilms can alter the microenvironment surrounding cancer cells. The altered extracellular matrix protects cancer cells and facilitates their ability to invade normal tissue and metastasize - form secondary cancers. Considering the prevalence of biofilm formation in the human body and its detrimental impact on cancer progression, there is a need to gain a deeper understanding of bacteria behavior in cancer. The more we learn, the more we can improve the diagnosis and treatment of biofilm- associated cancers and develop new and innovative treatment options. From Biofilm and Cancer: Interactions and Future Directions for Cancer Therapy. International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2023. This is extremely useful information, but one thing puzzled me. As you know from Module 4, bacteria emerge to clean up dead or rotting things, which would make sense if a tumour is invading our body. Something has to clean up our own dying tissues as the cancer progresses. Obviously these bacteria can make their own toxins and acids which have the potential to be harmful, but what about fungi? We learned in earlier modules that the yeast / slash fungus called Candida albicans can migrate to our tissues and grow there, producing the harmful and carcinogenic poison called acetaldehyde. In fact an Italian doctor named Dr Tullio Simoncini wrote an entire book in 2005 titled "Cancer is a Fungus". He describes how tumours are infiltrated with Candida albicans and patients can recover if the tumour is injected with sodium bicarbonate to kill the fungus. He reported a number of case histories. He was actually talking about the biofilm. So I searched for information on Candida albicans in cancer biofilms. Sure enough, it is a significant component. And, being in a biofilm, no amount of anti-fungal treatment is going to get rid of it. So there we have it. A fungus and tumour combo that damages the tissues around it, is invisible to our immune system, and creates an impenetrable barrier to any kind of medicine. It certainly looks to me like the biofilm is why it's so damn hard to recover from cancer. I have included some more information about Candida albicans and cancer biofilms in your additional resources. Dr Simoncini injected tumours to kill Candida with bicarbonate of soda. Many people have tried drinking bicarb dissolved in water to alkalize their body. It's good for your kidneys, but because of the biofilm, bicarb can't reach a tumour when taken orally. Is there ANYTHING we can do ourselves to perhaps dissolve the biofilm, and allow all our fantastic foods, herbs and supplements to reach the cancer cells and induce apoptosis? You bet there is! Biofilm podcast Google Notebook: Title of paper Research from St George Hospital, Sydney, Australia Dissolution of Biofilm Secreted by Three Different Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with Bromelain, N-Acetylcysteine, and Their Combinations Published in Applied Sciences journal, 2021 The paper examines three agents—bromelain (an enzyme from pineapple), N- acetylcysteine (NAC), and a combination of the two, on biofilms created by three strains of P. aeruginosa. The researchers wanted to understand how effective these agents are at breaking down biofilms in an effort to improve treatment strategies for chronic infections. They observed that these agents, particularly in combination, could weaken biofilms, suggesting a potential alternative treatment strategy for stubborn bacterial or fungal infections. Biofilm is a slimy secretion in the extracellular matrix that provides residence and protection for colonies of micro-organisms, making them immune to antibiotics. Cells embedded in biofilm stick to each other and often also to a surface. The proteins within the slimy secretion have amyloid-type behavior, forming fibrils that inter-link themselves. Cancer creates its own ecological system, and biofilms are one of its survival tools. These biofilms surround tumors like a cloak and can prevent the immune system from recognizing and penetrating them. Because antibiotics are not effective against biofilms, agents that disintegrate biofilms are a better choice. If they can destroy the structure of the slimy secretion within which micro-organisms reside, they can expose them to the immune system and render them vulnerable to antibiotics. Bromelain is an enzyme complex primarily derived from pineapple. It has been studied for various medicinal purposes, especially for its ability to break down proteins and promote anti-inflammatory responses. In addition to its role in managing bacterial biofilms, bromelain has attracted attention in cancer research. Studies suggest that bromelain could potentially target the protective biofilm structures around tumor cells. Tumor biofilms are similar to bacterial biofilms in that they protect cancerous cells from the immune system and treatments. By disrupting these biofilms, bromelain might help in making tumors more accessible to therapies and the immune sys tem. Research shows that bromelain may support cancer treatment by both breaking down protein structures within tumor biofilms and promoting apoptosis (cancer cell self- destruction) in tumor cells. Combining bromelain with other biofilm-disrupting agents could potentially weaken the defenses of tumors, allowing for better treatment outcomes. Bromelain appears to reduce biofilms through multiple mechanisms: Degradation of extracellular matrix components Disruption of bacterial cell adhesion Potential antibacterial effects In studies comparing bromelain to other enzymes: Bromelain showed similar or superior biofilm reduction compared to enzymes like α- amylase and p apain. "When we use proteolytic enzymes to break down the biofilm, many therapies appear to become more effective. Systemic enzymes carry very little risk and are easy for patients to take." Dr Donese Worden, NMD. We are looking forward to more research in this exciting area. BROMELAIN CAPSULES 500mg (3000 GDU) I would certainly add a teaspoon of bromelain powder to a glass of juice twice a day with meals. I buy the powder from Indian companies selling it on Ebay. It's much cheaper that way. If you buy capsules, make sure they have the highest GDU rating. N-acetylcysteine comes in capsules of 600 milligrams. I would take one capsule twice a day with f ood. There's one more natural product that is known to be able to dissolve biofilms. It also neutralizes many toxic substances and kills parasites. These properties would explain why it's gaining so much popularity as a natural anti-tumour therapy. I'm talking about Chlorine Dioxide Solution or CDS, often referred to as "MMS" or "Universal Antidote" - that's NASA's description, not ours! As shown in the photo, MMS is a kit consisting of sodium chlorite, which has to be added to water and mixed with weak hydrochloric acid. You can buy the kits online. (Please note: in most countries, the law does not allow sellers to suggest these kits are for human consumption.) Yes, I know you can buy water purification tablets called chlorine dioxide, but once in the body these don't have the required stability to provide the necessary therapeutic effect. CDS really is a powerful therapy, and personally I would use it for several weeks right after a week of intestinal cleansing using magnesium ascorbate vitamin C and psyllium. DON'T use both at the same time. Before starting MMS it's essential to carefully read the instructions first. If you start with too high a dose you WILL get a Herxheimer reaction, which is when there are too many dying micro-organisms. As they die, they release toxins that can make you extremely unwell. I have included some pdfs with full instructions in your additional resources. I have also provided links to case reports of successful cancer remissions after using this therapy. YOU CAN EAT VITAMIN C RICH FOODS BUT YOU MUST NOT SUPPLEMENT WITH VITAMIN C WHILE YOU ARE USING CHLORINE DIOXIDE THERAPY. Module 5 Modern Naturopathy for Cancer Video 6: Putting it all together School of Modern Naturopathy Welcome to video 6. This continues the guidance for patients who refuse conventional cancer treatments. In this video I am going to mention some more therapeutic products that have exploded on to the scene in recent years. I'm then going to summarize my personal anti-cancer protocol, based on what I have been teaching in this module. Fenbendazole directly attacks cancer cells in four ways It promotes apoptosis by destroying microtubules that sustain the structure of the cancer cell and its ability to divide and multiply rapidly. It interrupts the cancer cells’ ability to process sugar (cancer cells must metabolize sugar to survive). It boosts the production of a cancer-killing gene called p53, a gene that cancer patients may lack. When p53 becomes mutated or can’t keep cancer cells in check, cancer cells can proliferate. It reduces the likelihood of cancer stem cells developing. As a de-wormer it also destroys parasites. After the mind-blowing information revealed about so many foods that induce apoptosis, the biofilm that blocks them, and the supplements that dissolve the biofilm and let the foods do their job - it almost seems like an anticlimax to talk about any more products. But there are two more important products which have recently gained popularity as tumour-fighting medicines. These are the anti-parasitic medicines Fenbendazole and Ivermectin. Let's start with Fenbendazole. It's actually a veterinary medicine used to treat roundworm in animals. In fact, a pea-sized blob of Panacur horse paste is how people are taking it to fight cancer. (It tastes fine by the way, and has extremely low toxicity, which is why you can buy it without a prescription.) You can see here how Fenbendazole acts against cancer. I will include this and more information in your additional resources. https://www.faim.org/a-cure-for-cancer-hidden-in-plain-sight Ivermectin directly attacks cancer cells in four ways In the test tube, Ivermectin has shown the ability to inhibit cell growth in various cancer cell lines, including breast, ovarian, prostate, colon, and pancreatic cancer. Ivermectin can promote cancer cell apoptosis by upregulating pro- apoptotic proteins like Bax and cleaved PARP, while downregulating anti- apoptotic proteins like Bcl-24. Ivermectin has been observed to induce cell cycle arrest, particularly in the S phase, in colorectal cancer cells. Treatment with ivermectin has been shown to induce ICD and robust T cell infiltration into breast tumours, potentially enhancing the immune response against cancer. As a de-wormer it also destroys parasites. Ivermectin is both a human and a veterinary medicine, used to treat parasitic infections. You can see here how Ivermectin acts against cancer. I will include this and more information in your additional resources. Ivermectin, a potential anticancer drug derived from an antiparasitic drug https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7505114/ The multitargeted drug ivermectin: from an antiparasitic agent to a repositioned cancer drug https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5835698/ Orthomolecular journal https://diamondz.substack.com/p/breaking-first-in-the-world-ivermectin Where to get and how to use Fenbendazole and Ivermectin Dr Lee Merritt is the best source of this information. Her website drleemerritt.com is well worth a visit, and you can find her protocols there for the use of Fenbendazole and Ivermectin (look under Parasites), as well as her guidelines for how to use chlorine dioxide. As we know, tumours use a biofilm to protect themselves from attack, so I would do at least a couple of weeks anti-biofilm work before starting these anti-parasitics. As the biofilm starts to break down, it releases toxins that could make you feel really unwell. This is known as the Herxheimer reaction. It's important to avoid this by doing anti- cancer work step by step with careful self-monitoring. Candida albicans fungus As we learned in the last video, Candida albicans, which belongs to the fungus family, is also a major component of biofilm, and produces a cancer promoter called acetaldehyde. Attempts to treat this fungus are also best started at least a week or two after beginning anti-biofilm work, to give them the best chance. There are many natural products which aim to treat Candida, including citrus seed extract, essential oils of cloves and, oregano, raw garlic, and caprylic acid (from coconuts). By all means swallow little pieces of raw garlic every day - don't chew them unless you want really bad breath! Once the biofilm has started to dissolve, clove and oregano essential oils have the best chance of getting to the Candida that's inside or surrounding a tumour. My preferred product is capsules of powdered cloves. These have natural time-release for their oils, and will not suddenly bombard your body and perhaps cause a harmful Herxheimer reaction. Herxheimer happens when patients are impatient and try to do too much. It really must be avoided. I would start with one clove powder capsule a day (with food) on the days when I am not using the anti-parasitic medicines. As always, I would not increase the dose until I'm absolutely sure I am not overloading my system. The maximum dose is shown on the product label. WHOLE-FOOD PLANT- BASED DIET Bromelain powder 1 tsp twice a day with food NAC 500 mg twice a day with food Mag ascorbate vitamin C to bowel tolerance + Psyllium (cleanse) Anti-parasite protocol (drleemerritt.com) Vitamins A and D Turmeric (curcumin) Add a few drops of DMSO to everything Positive affirmations “Sing your own song” therapies Homeopathic carcinosin WHOLE-FOOD PLANT- BASED DIET Bromelain powder 1 tsp twice a day with food NAC 500 mg twice a day with food Chlorine dioxide protocol (drleemerritt.com) Anti-parasite protocol (drleemerritt.com) Restricts protein Encourages tumour apoptosis Anti-fungal clove powder capsules Here's my summary of what I would do if I had a cancer diagnosis. I would remember to build this up slowly, to make sure not to overload myself with toxins from dying biofilm. Plan A is partly anti-inflammatory, anti-biofilm, and partly bowel cleansing to get rid of dead micro-organism toxins. I would start with this unless I am already achieving at least two soft bowel movements per day. Bowel tolerance means using the amount of Magnesium ascorbate vitamin C that makes your bowels move 2-3 times a day but not more. It varies from person to person. Keeping the bowels moving well is very important. Plan B with its chlorine dioxide is more heavily focused on biofilm breakdown. Vitamin C deactivates chlorine dioxide so you cannot take it at the same time. I would pay close attention to how I feel, and any results I'm getting. If I experience nausea or excessive fatigue, tummy upsets and so on, I would pull back and rest. There is more detailed information about this plan in your additional resources. Here's my advice for every patient Don't forget how important it is to get toxic situations out of your life. Cancer is an invasion that your body for whatever reason has allowed and accepted. Learning to say no to people or situations that want to invade you mentally or spiritually is just as important as saying no to cancer. Don't allow anything to drain that vital energy that the early naturopaths wrote about. It may also drain your immune system. Do things that lift your spirits, make you laugh and enjoy life. Reading Bernie Siegel's books can help to give you ideas. WHOLE-FOOD PLANT- BASED DIET Bromelain powder 1 tsp twice a day with food NAC 500 mg twice a day with food Mag ascorbate vitamin C to bowel tolerance + Psyllium (cleanse) Anti-parasite protocol (drleemerritt.com) Vitamins A and D Turmeric (curcumin) Add a few drops of DMSO to everything Positive affirmations “Sing your own song” therapies Homeopathic carcinosin Anti-fungal clove powder capsules WHOLE-FOOD PLANT- BASED DIET Bromelain powder 1 tsp twice a day with food NAC 500 mg twice a day with food Dr Lee Merrit’s chlorine dioxide protocol Anti-parasite protocol (drleemerritt.com) Restricts protein Encourages tumour apoptosis Here's my summary of what I would do if I had a cancer diagnosis. I would remember to build this up slowly, to make sure not to overload myself with toxins from dying biofilm. Schedule A is partly anti-inflammatory, anti-biofilm, and partly cleansing to get rid of toxic broken down biofilm. Schedule B with its chlorine dioxide is more heavily focused on biofilm breakdown. Here's my step by step procedure. First obtain curcumin (or turmeric with 95 percent curcumin content), bromelain, NAC, fenbendazole, MMS and DMSO. Plus magnesium ascorbate powder and whole unpowdered psyllium husks if intending to use schedule A. Daily with breakfast: Beet juice, vitamins A and D, curcumin. With lunch: Fenbendazole or Ivermectin as per drleemerritt.com. Twice a day with main meals: A level teaspoon of bromelain powder dissolved in juice plus 1 capsule of NAC 500mg. After a few days, if my bowels are not moving at least twice a day, I would start magnesium ascorbate vitamin C powder dissolved in water and mixed with psyllium as described in the separate protocol. After a week on this regime, if feeling ok (detox reactions can make people feel temporarily unwell) I would start MMS (chlorine dioxide) as per Dr Lee Merritt’s protocol. Don't forget to add a few drops of DMSO to your water or juice when you take a supplement. I would probably switch between schedule A and schedule B every week, and would alternate Fenben and Ivermectin. However I would pay close attention to how I feel, and any results I'm getting, and pull back if I experience nausea or excessive fatigue, tummy upsets and so on. Whatever seems to be working best I would consider doing for longer before switching. == How common is Candida albicans in the cancer biofilm? Candida albicans is a significant component of biofilms in cancer patients, particularly those with compromised immune systems. Here's an overview of the research on C. albicans in cancer-associated biofilms: Prevalence in Cancer Patients C. albicans is commonly found in biofilms of cancer patients, especially those with: Oral cancers Lung cancer Gastrointestinal cancers Studies have shown that C. albicans colonization and biofilm formation is increased in cancer patients compared to healthy individuals. Reference 1 Reference 2 Impact on Cancer Progression Research indicates C. albicans biofilms may promote cancer development and progression through: Damaging mucosal epithelium Inducing production of carcinogens Triggering chronic inflammation Altering the tumour microenvironment For example, studies have found C. albicans promotes oral squamous cell carcinoma by stimulating production of matrix metalloproteinases and activating tumor-promoting signaling pathways Reference 3 Biofilm Characteristics C. albicans biofilms in cancer patients often display: Hyperfilamentation - excessive growth of filamentous forms Increased drug resistance - up to 4000 times more resistant than planktonic cells Complex 3D structures with extracellular matrix Heights ranging from ~10 μm to over 1000 μm in some cases Reference 4 Clinical Implications The prevalence of C. albicans biofilms in cancer has important clinical implications: Increased risk of invasive candidiasis Reduced efficacy of antifungal treatments Potential to promote cancer progression Need for biofilm-specific therapeutic approaches In conclusion, C. albicans is a common and clinically significant component of biofilms in cancer patients. Understanding its prevalence and impact is crucial for developing effective management strategies in cancer care. == Recent research studies finding that plant lectins or glucans can induce cancer cell suicide (apoptosis) For easier comprehension, we have edited the text to replace the Latin names with English names as much as possible. Lectins are carbohydrate-binding plant proteins involved in cell recognition. Some lectins, particularly from legumes, are studied for their anti-cancer properties due to their ability to bind specific sugars on the surface of cancer cells. The studies shown below report on the lectins from edible legumes that can preferentially induce apoptosis in cancer cells but not in normal cells. Glucans, found in oats, barley, mushrooms and yeast, are sugar-based molecules that often enhance immune responses. They have been investigated for their ability to stimulate immune cells like macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells to attack tumours.
