Module 10: Nutrition for Health Lesson 2: Nutrients Define the following terms: Carbohydrates: starches and sugars found in foods that provide your body’s main source of energy Fiber: a tough, complex, carbohydrate that the body cannot digest Proteins: nutrients the body uses to build and maintain its cells and tissues Cholesterol: a waxy, fatlike substance Minerals: elements found in food that are used by the body What is the BIG IDEA for this lesson/chapter? The big idea for this lesson is to understand how each nutrient in your diet plays a unique and essential role in keeping you healthy. Giving Your Body What It Needs What is the MAIN IDEA? The main idea is that each of the six nutrients has a specific job or vital function to keep you healthy. What are THREE ways your body uses nutrients? Three ways your body uses nutrients are: 1. As an energy source 2. To sustain growth 3. To heal, build, and repair tissue What are the SIX types of nutrients found in foods? The six types of nutrients found in food are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. What THREE nutrients provide energy for your body? Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the three nutrients that provide energy for your body. Nutrients that Provide Energy What is the MAIN IDEA? The main idea is that carbohydrates, proteins, and fats provide energy and help maintain your body. What are the THREE food sources that energy for the body comes from? Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the three food sources of energy you need for your body. What do these three sources do for the body? The body uses these three sources to build, repair, and fuel itself. What are the THREE types of carbohydrates? The three types of carbohydrates are simple, complex, and fiber carbohydrates. What is glucose? Glucose is a simple sugar that most of the carbohydrates you consume are turned into. What is the main source of fuel for your body? The main source of fuel for your body is simple carbohydrates. What are THREE benefits of eating foods that are high in fiber? Three benefits of eating food that are high in fiber are: 1. Feeling of fullness 2. May reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes 3. Aids digestion What are FIVE sources of fiber? Five sources of fiber are fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and products made from whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. What are amino acids and what are the two types of amino acids? Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. What proteins are considered “complete” proteins? Proteins that come from animal sources, such as meat, eggs, and dairy products are considered “complete” proteins. What are some plant-based foods that are rich in protein? Grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes are some plant-based foods that are rich in protein. What parts of the body are constructed of protein? Muscles, bones, skin, and internal organs are all constructed of protein. What percent of your total daily calories come from protein? Between 10 to 15 percent of your total daily calories should come from protein. How many grams of protein should teen boys consume daily? Teen girls? Teen boys between the ages of 14 to 18 should aim to consume about 52 grams of protein per day, and teen girls of the same age need 46 grams per day. What are the THREE types of fats that are found in our food? Unsaturated, saturated, and trans are the three types of fats that are found in our food. Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are health problems someone who carries too much body fat can develop. Other Types of Nutrients What is the MAIN IDEA? The main idea is that vitamins, minerals, and water perform a wide variety of body functions. What are the TWO types of vitamins? The two types of vitamins are water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins. Why is it important to consume foods that contain minerals? It is important to consume foods that contain minerals because your body cannot produce minerals, and must get them from food. What are FOUR ways water can help with how our body functions? Water can help with how our body functions by: 1. Moving food through the digestive system 2. Digesting carbohydrates and protein, and aiding other chemical reactions 3. Transporting nutrients and removing wastes 4. Storing and releasing heat What percent of our daily water intake comes from food? 20 percent of our daily water intake comes from food. What are some drinks that cause our bodies to lose fluids and may result in dehydration? Drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and some soft drinks cause our bodies to lose fluids and may result in dehydration. What is something NEW you have learned from reading about nutrients and how they affect your body?
