Ancient River Civilizations Enduring Understandings Complex societies are a product of people’s effort to create order and organization. Each civilization has distinct economic, political, and social patterns.  ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS How should we understand the social complexity of “civilizations”? What does it take for a civilization to begin and endure? What makes each civilization unique or distinct?  TRANSFER GOAL The students will utilize their understanding of how group and institutional influences such as religious beliefs, laws, and peer pressure, on people, events, and elements of culture.  How much do you know about Ancient River Civilizations?  Civilization A civilization is a complex human society, usually made up of different cities, with certain characteristics of cultural and technological development... However, defining what civilization is, and what societies fall under that designation, is a hotly contested argument, even among today’s anthropologists. -National Geographic  is a large group of people who live together in a specific space. A city is usually a center for trade, and city dwellers create goods that can be traded along with services for the city. Machu Picchu A government with rules and way of voting or control a set of spiritual beliefs, values, practices beliefs and rituals helped shape the governments that developed in their river valley civilizations  Government and Religion - closely related Rulers were seen either as gods or as the chosen representatives of the gods. Ruler served as tge chief priest and led religious observances. Laws were seen as the ruler's way of carrying out commands from the gods. Priests held great power in the government The Great Pyramids  specific jobs with requirements or specialties  a broad group in society having common economic, cultural, or political status/ Distinguished from other groups by such things as wealth, property, and rights A method of keeping records of history, culture and trade of the civilization. Almost every civilization devised some form of writing, and this is why the beginning if civilization also marked the beginning of written history. Material evidence from a civilization.
