The lslamic University College of Medical technology Second Stage Practical Medical Bacterriology االول:المختبر Lab :1 Practical Medical Bacterriology 1 SAFTY IN LABORATORY: 1- Never bring food or drink into the laboratory. 2- before you enter the lab, you should be Wearing a lab coat and gloves and Open wounds must be bandaged. 3- Be prepared for your work in the laboratory. Read all procedures. 4- If you spill a culture, place a paper towel over the spill and pour disinfectant on the towel. Wait for 15 minutes then clean the spill. place paper towels in wastebaskets and wash your hands. 5- Keep hands away from your face, eyes, mouth and body. 6- Never use flammable liquids such as ethanol near an open flame. Clean with disinfectant, and wipe dry all work surfaces and apparatus at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean to the proper place. 2 An incubator is a device used to maintain constant temperature for grow and reproduction of bacteria and other microorganism as pathogen bacteria grow at 37 c for 24 hours. Analytical Balance An analytical balance measures the precision in determining the mass of solid objects, powders, and granular substances Hot Plate A hot plate provides heat to solutions and materials uniformly. It is much safer than a Bunsen burner because an open flame is not present in the hot plate. Vortex Mixers A vortex mixer mixes laboratory samples in test tubes, well plates, or flasks. 3 Loop: is called a smear loop, is a simple tool used in microbiology to pick up and transfer a small sample from a culture of microorganisms for streaking on a culture plate. Bunsen burner Is a common piece of laboratory equipment that produces a single open gas flame, which is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion. Water bath: Is laboratory equipment made from a container filled with heated water. It is used to incubate samples in water at a constant temperature to period of time. 4 Glassware: 1- Flask: use for making solutions, collecting chemical. 2- Volumetric flask: use for making solutions to a known volume. 3- Beaker: use for mixing, and heat liquid. 4- Graduated Cylinder: used to measure the volume of liquid. 5
