The Heart and Circulation Know the function of the circulatory system. Recognise the different sections of the heart Recognise the organs of the circulatory system. Key Words Artery Left atrium Vein Right atrium Blood vessel Valves Heart Capillary Right ventricle Left ventricle Obj.1 Know the functions of the circulatory system. Removing Transporting CARBON OXYGEN & DIOXIDE & NUTRIENTS to LACTIC ACID major organs away from the muscle cells Maintaining body temperature & fluid levels (homeostasis) Obj 2 Recognise the different sections of the heart The heart is made of muscle. It has four chambers. Its job is to pump blood around the body. As the muscles in the heart contract, they squeeze blood out, through the blood vessels. The four chambers of the heart are as follows: 1. The left atrium 2. The left ventricle 3. The right atrium 4. The right ventricle The heart is divided from right to left by a thick central muscular wall called the SEPTUM RIGHT SIDE OF Left side of the THE HEART PUMPS heart pumps BLOOD WHICH IS blood which is LOW IN OXYGEN rich in oxygen to TO THE LUNGS all other parts of the body The left atrium receives the blood from the lungs and pumps it into the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps blood around the whole body. The right atrium receives blood from the body and pumps it to the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs and the cycle begins again Note the fact that In between the atrium To stop the back & ventricles there are flow of blood. special structures called VALVES What is the role of the valves? The ventricles have much thicker, muscular walls than the atria. Why? This is because they have to pump blood much further around the body. Obj. 2 Recognise the organs of the circulatory system. There are three types of blood vessels in the human body: 1. Arteries 2. Veins 3. Capillaries
