Non Prosthetic Appliances “Stents” Definition Stents were Defined by Charles R stent as: Appliances constructed to cover the tissues and/or the teeth, used for protection, to carry medicaments, radium for radiation, or to control bleeding. Stents Common Uses of stents Carry medicaments. Help to control bleeding, especially in hemophilic patients. Protect the tissues after skin and mucosal grafts and keep them in place until they take place Protect teeth and associated structures in contact sports. Carry radium materials and keep them in place for treatment of malignancy. Preserve the depth of the vestibules after sulcus deepening and ridge augmentation procedures. Types: Stents Preoperative and intra-operative Postoperative healing Radiographic stent Surgical guides Miscellaneous devices Therapeutic devices Stent for the plastic surgery of the oral mucosa Habit breaking appliances Anit- hemorrhagic stent Radiotherapy aiding devices Palatal stent Trismus appliances Cyst plug Occlusal therapy appliances Drainage stent Nasal stent Burn stent Appliances for sleep disordered breathing Splints Mandibular guidance prosthesis Periodontal stent. Mouth guard. Materials used Acrylic resin: heat curing or self-curing resins. Soft materials: Soft rubber or soft resins and silicone. Modeling plastic: black gutta percha. Preoperative and intraoperative stents Preoperative and intraoperative appliances: 1. Radiographic stents. 2. Surgical stent. 1.Radiographic stents Surgical stent. Post-operative healing stents. Post-operative healing stents: The aim of these appliances is to protect the tissues after surgeries and promote healing. Examples: 1.Stents for plastic surgery of the alveolar ridges. 2.Palatal stent. 3.Anti hemorrhagic stent. 4.Cyst plug. 5.Nasal stent. 6.Burn stent. 7.Drainage stent. 1- Stents for plastic surgery of the oral mucosa: Used after alveolar ridge surgeries as vestibuloplasty or soft tissue grafts to maintain the vestibular depth or to stabilize the graft 2- Palatal stent: Used after surgeries in the palate as removal of torus palatinus, or using the palate as a donor site of a keratinized graft 3- Anti-hemorrhagic stent The aim is to control bleeding after extraction The design differs between patient with clotting disorders (hemophilia), and patient with high bleeding tendency due to platelet deficiency 4- Cyst plug Used after cyst marsupialization to protect the wide wound from contamination while keeping the orifice of the cyst open for drainage. 5- Nasal stent A removable intranasal prosthesis used to support the form of the nose after nasal surgery 6- Burn stent Used after surgical reopening of a stenosis caused by a burn in the oral commissure to maintain the opening and prevent scar contracture 7- Drainage stent: A type of stent used to support a rubber drain. Placed on the buccal and occlusal surface. Used with long duration incision and drainage. Types: Stents Preoperative and intra-operative Postoperative healing Radiographic stent Surgical guides Miscellaneous devices Therapeutic devices Stent for the plastic surgery of the oral mucosa Habit breaking appliances Anit- hemorrhagic stent Radiotherapy aiding devices Palatal stent Trismus appliances Cyst plug Occlusal therapy appliances Drainage stent Nasal stent Burn stent Appliances for sleep disordered breathing Splints Mandibular guidance prosthesis Periodontal stent. Mouth guard. Therapeutic devices Therapeutic devices Devices used for a limited period of time to perform a certain therapeutic function Examples: 1. Oral Screen 2. Occlusal therapy appliances 3. Periodontal Stents 4. Mouth Guards for contact sports 5. Splints 6. Radiotherapy aiding device 7. Trismus appliances 1- Oral Screen 2- Occlusal therapy appliances Problems related to TMJ are complex and related to the joint, muscles, and teeth The aim of these devices is either to temporary elevate the VDO (stabilization appliance), or temporarily advance the mandible (Anterior repositioning splint) 3- Periodontal stent or labiolingual stent It holds the periodontal dressing in place during the healing phase. 4- Mouth guard or mouth protector for contact sports A resilient intraoral device constructed to protect the teeth and surrounding structures from injury during contact sport as boxing. Types 1. Stock type: This type has many disadvantages: i. ill-fitting and looseness during use. ii. Interferes with speech and breathing. iii. It is thick on the occlusal surface. 2. Constructed directly in the mouth Flexible material that can be shaped and molded in the mouth until setting 3. Custom made: This type requires impressions that should he made for every player. The stent is then constructed on the casts. 5- Trismus appliance 6- sleeping disorder (apnea) stent M.A.D. 7- mandibular guidance prosthesis 8- radiotherapy prosthesis. 9- splints. Miscellaneous : Mouth control devices for assisting the handicapped Stents Types: Preoperative and intra-operative Postoperative healing Radiographic stent Surgical guides Miscellaneous devices Therapeutic devices Stent for the plastic surgery of the oral mucosa Habit breaking appliances Anit- hemorrhagic stent Radiotherapy aiding devices Palatal stent Trismus appliances Cyst plug Occlusal therapy appliances Drainage stent Nasal stent Burn stent Appliances for sleep disordered breathing Splints Mandibular guidance prosthesis Periodontal stent.
