BASIC ECOLOGY What is Ecology? Came from two Greek words Oikos – house (household) Logos – study What is Ecology? - the study of earth’s household What is Ecology? “Ecology is the study of the relationship between living organisms, including humans and their physical environment. It seeks to understand the vital connections between plants and animals and the world around them.” Source: Ecological Society of America What is Ecology? “Ecology also provides information about benefits of ecosystem and how we can use Earth’s resources in ways that leave the environment healthy for future generation” Source: Ecological Society of America FACTORS OF ECOLOGY BIOTIC FACTORS ABIOTIC FACTORS FACTORS OF ECOLOGY ECOSYSTEM Ecosystem is a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with its environment. INTERACTIONS IN THE ECOSYSTEM PHOTOSYNTHESIS FOOD CHAIN FOOD CHAIN FOOD CHAIN shows how each living thing... gets food... how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to creature. FOOD CHAIN There is actually even more to this chain. After a bird dies, fungi (like mushrooms) and other decomposers break down the dead bird, and turn the remains of the bird into nutrients, which are released into the soil. The nutrients (plus sun and water) then cause the grass to grow. It's a full circle of life and energy! PARTS OF THE FOOD CHAIN There are three types of consumers: Animals that eat only plants. Animals that eat only animals. Animals that eat both plants and animals. What kind of consumer am I? PARTS OF THE FOOD CHAIN When I die, these organisms will feast on my flesh as if there is no more tomorrow. Fungi and bacteria play an important role in nature. They breakdown the unused dead material and turn them into nutrients in the soil, which plants use to grow. They are an important part of the food chain. All ecosystems contain many different food chains. FOOD WEB EXAMPLE OF FOOD WEB BIODIVERSITY is the wealth of life forms on earth, encompassing all species of plants, animals, and microorganisms and the ecosystems and ecological processes of which they are part. QUICK FACTS! Philippines, one of 18 mega-biodiverse countries of the world SHORT QUIZ SHORT QUIZ What is the wealth of life forms on earth, encompassing all species of plants, animals, and microorganisms and the ecosystems and ecological processes of which they are part? True or false? All ecosystems contain many different food chains.
