Basic Drafting Tools Drafting Papers specially prepared for drawing on with pencils and pens. The paper is smooth, erasable and made from different materials including vellum and film. Drafting Papers Drafting Papers bond Mylar tracing Pencils For precision in the drawing of lines, drafting/drawing pencils are made in a number of grades. The grades for the graphite (pencil lead) range from hard to soft. In general, hard pencils draw light lines; soft pencils draw darker and wider lines. The hardest standard grade for drafting/drawing pencils is 9H. The softest pencil is grade 6B. Pencils The degree of hardness of a pencil is printed on the pencil. The degrees of hardness of pencils are roughly divided into four groups: B stands for "black". These pencils are soft. H stands for "hard". HB stands for "hard black", which means "medium hard". F stands for "firm". Pencils Mechanical Pencil (Lead Holder) Used to hold leads of various hardness's Compass Used to draw circles and arcs Divider Used to transfer dimensions Drafting Tape A specially-prepared tape used to adhere drawing media to the working surface Masking Tape Art Dusting Brush Used to brush loose graphite and eraser dust from a drawing Eraser Used to remove pencil lines and graphite smudges from a drawing Erasing Shield A metal plate with various slots and openings used to protect line work when a portion of the drawing is to be erased Irregular Curve (French Curve) Used to lay out any noncircular curve Lead Pointer Used for sharpening mechanical pencil leads Lettering Guide Used to lay out guidelines for lettering Protractor Used to measure angles Scales/ Rulers Used to measure the length of a line T-Square used for establishing a horizontal reference on the drafting board. T-Square Template A thin, flat, plastic tool with various size openings of different shapes used to expedite the drawing of standard features Triangle A thin, flat, right- angled piece of plastic or metal with acute angles of 45, or 30 and 60 used for drawing vertical or inclined lines that are multiples of 15 Triangle Adjustable Set Square Adjustable set squares allow a range of angles to be drawn accurately. They can be adjusted to a variety of angles which means only one set square is required. It must still be used by resting accurately on a T-square. Adjustable Set Square Rules for Maintenance and Care of Drafting Tools & Equipment Keep hands and Do not hit scales and equipment clean triangles on edges Keep all instruments Do not overextend clean and dry compasses and dividers Do no bend templates Clean plastic tools with sharply soap and water only Do not use templates or Do not stick compasses scales as straight edges and divider points into for cutting tools scales and triangles Do not use templates as Never sharpen leads eraser shields over drawing or table surface
