Communication Models Prof. Francis Quilantang Far Eastern University Department of Communication Basic Communication Models  Linear(action)  Interactive  Transactional Linear Model  Also called ACTION MODEL, communication is transmitted in a straightforward manner from a sender to a receiver.  Harold Lasswell  - described communication as a linear or one way process, in which one person acts on another person.  Claude Shannon & Warren Weaver  -refined Laswell’s model by adding the concept of noise.  Noise-is anything that interferes with the intended meaning of communication. Interactive Models  The interaction model views communication as an interaction in which a message is sent and then followed by a reaction (feedback), which is then followed by another reaction, and so on. From this view, communication is defined as producing conversations and interactions within physical and psychological contexts. Transactional Models  is the exchange of messages between sender and receiver where each take turns to send or receive messages. Here, both "sender" and "receiver" are known as "communicators" and their role reverses each time in the communication process as both processes of sending and receiving occurs at the same time.  The communicators can be humans or machines but humans are taken as communicators in this article to analyze general communication between humans. The model is mostly used for interpersonal communication and is also called circular model of communication Characteristics of communication Communication relies on multiple channels Communication involves many channels at once. (Channel rich context) Face-to-face Communication also involves small number of channels.(channel lean context) Text message Characteristics of communication Communication passes through perceptual filters Perception is the process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting information. This process includes the perception of select stimuli that pass through our perceptual filters, are organized into our existing structures and patterns, and are then interpreted based on previous experiences. Although perception is a largely cognitive and psychological process, how we perceive the people and objects around has an effect on our communication. We respond differently to an object or person that we perceive favorably than we do to something we find unfavorable Characteristics of communication People give communication its meaning People give meaning to words according to their purpose. Language is arbitrary in the sense that words mean whatever groups of people decide they mean Characteristics of communication Communication can be divided into two broad categories: content and relational. Content is the what of any message. It is the facts and figures, the ideas and opinions that we transmit through e-mails, conversations, memos, or notes on the bulletin board. It is anything that can be expressed in words. Relational communication pertains to the who of any interaction. Though we may be unaware of it, every instance of content communication is surrounded by a field of relational communication that reveals the way parties view and are viewed by each other. It defines, in large part, the nature of the relationship between the two of them. Characteristics of communication Communication is governed by rules INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION Interpersonal communication involves the information, ideas, and feelings being exchanged verbally or non-verbally between two or more people. Face-to-face communication often involves hearing, seeing, and feeling body language, facial expressions, and gestures. Interpersonal communication evolves within relationship Interpersonal communication negotiates and defines relationships IMPORTANCE OF INTER PERSONAL COMMUNICATION Interpersonal communication is pervasive.
