## Barium Meal - **Radiographic examination of upper GIT and proximal small bowel.** - **Performed to diagnose structural and functional abnormalities of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.** - **Contrast media used:** BaSO4 ### Indications: 1. Dyspepsia - indigestion 2. Epigastric pain 3. Heart burn 4. Mal-rotation (in born disease) 5. Anemia (weight loss) ### Contraindications: 1. Suspected pregnancy 2. Large bowel obstruction 3. Suspected fistula & perforation ### Equipments: 1. Fluoroscopy/x-ray unit with tilting table attached 2. Image intensifier is used 3. Thin density barium sulphate for single contrast study 4. Thick density BaSO4 double contrast effervescent powder is used 5. Gas produced ### Patient Preparation: - **Fasting may be employed for 4 hours.** - **Ask the patient to take low residue diet prior to the examination.** - **Ask the patient not to eat or drink after midnight.** - **Instruct the patient not to smoke or chew gum.** ### Procedure: 1. **Describe the whole procedure to the patient.** 2. **Technologist should obtain consent from the patient for permission of procedure.** 3. **Ask the patient to remove clothes and wear hospital gown.** 4. **Place the patient in the upright position with head turned behind the fluoroscopy screen.** 5. **The patient is instructed to take 10-15 ml BaSO4 and swallow it.** 6. **The passage of barium is examined by radiologist under fluoroscopy screen.** 7. **After that, the patient is placed in supine position and is made aware that the coat the Ba on the stomach mucosa.** 8. **Then rotate the patient clockwise for giving the BaSO4.** 9. **Then the patient is placed in prone position. In this position, the Ba enters the duodenum, and a spot film is taken.** 10. **In RAO position, the spot film is taken.** ### After Care: 1. **Patient will be able to leave the examination room after the confirmation of procedure.** 2. **Ask the patient to increase fluid intake to avoid constipation.** 3. **Inform the patient about feces will be whitish for two days.**
