BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) ATA 45 - ONBOARD MAINTENANCE SYSTEM TO BE USED FOR MAINTENANCE TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY B1/B2 MAINTENANCE TRAINING MANUAL Issue 6 - January 2023 Page 1 of 198 BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) CENTRAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM GENERAL DESCRIPTION The central maintenance system has different sub-systems to do these functions: • • Monitor, record, test, and show the condition of the avionics and some of the other aircraft systems Sense and store the level of propeller unbalance during flight The central maintenance system has these sub-systems: • • Central Diagnostic System Propeller Balance Monitoring System CENTRALIZED DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM The CDS lets aircraft maintenance personnel do these procedures: • • • • Read the avionics status report Read malfunction reports from last or previous flight legs Do fault isolation and return to service tests after maintenance is completed Read the part number of the monitored Line Replaceable Units (LRU) PROPELLER BALANCE MONITORING SYSTEM The propeller assembly is initially statically balanced using bolts and washers installed in holes in the spinner back-plate. The propeller balance monitoring system automatically determines and stores the level of propeller unbalance during flight. It shares the processor in the Input/Output Processor module No.1 (IOP1) with the Flight Data Processing System (FDPS). External wiring prevents CDS functions from IOP2. The CDS lets aircraft maintenance personnel to do the procedures that follow: • • • • Read the avionics status report Read fault reports from last or previous flight legs Fault isolation Read the part number of Line Replaceable Units (LRU) it monitors NOTES: The CDS does not access the Built-In-Test-Equipment (BITE) of the avionics systems it interfaces with. During shop maintenance, special test equipment is used to make this troubleshooting data available. The pre-flight system checks are done by related switches in the flight compartment and not by the CDS. The CDS does not do the pre-flight operational tests. These tests are done manually with related switches in the flight compartment. The CDS is used for troubleshooting. It is not approved as the only return-to-service functional test after maintenance is completed. Use the procedures described in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM). A maintenance switch located on the maintenance panel above the wardrobe and the Audio Radio Control and Display Units (ARCDUs) are used to control the operation of the CDS and to show the condition of the LRUs as messages in plain English. The fault reports in the CDS NVM are automatically cleared when a system fault is corrected because of real-time monitoring. GENERAL DESCRIPTION CONTINUED TYPE 1 The type 1 systems interface with the CDS through one input and one output ARINC 429 data bus. The type 1 systems supply their fault reports to the CDS in real-time and the CDS supplies date, time, aircraft serial number, and flight/ground data to the type 1 systems. A transmit data request signal from the CDS is needed to do an Initiated-Built-In-Test (IBIT). TYPE 2 The type 2 systems also supply their fault reports in real-time and a transmit data request signal from the CDS is needed to do an IBIT. TYPE 3 The type 3 systems show their system status but do not have an initiated IBIT function. Avionics system faults are grouped into the two classes that follow: • • Class 1 Class 2 CLASS 1 A class 1 fault condition prevents continued operation of a specific LRU or system channel. Its condition is shown to the pilots as an advisory message, or a warning, caution, or advisory light in the flight compartment. CLASS 2 A class 2 fault condition lets the system continue to operate. These conditions are not shown to the pilots. It also has a fault message storage capacity that follows: SYSTEM OPERATION • • • MODES OF OPERATION CONTINUED For each class 1 malfunction, the NVM saves the fault data that follows: MONITORING MODE During the monitoring mode, the avionics and other aircraft systems continuously supply data that relates to their condition to the CDS. The CDS operates in the monitoring mode for avionics and other aircraft systems when one of the conditions that follow is sensed: • • • • • • • • Transmits date, time, and airborne or on ground flight condition data to the type 1 systems. The data is saved in the Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) of the avionics equipment Transmit aircraft type and serial number to a Remote Control Audio Unit (RCAU) Receives system status data through an ARINC 429 bus or discrete output from different avionics systems in real-time Receives avionics configuration data from the Aircraft Configuration Module (ACM) Saves fault reports in a Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) in the CDS Sorts status data from different systems Supplies fuel flow, fuel temperature and main oil pressure parameters to the Engine Monitoring Unit (EMU) TO BE USED FOR MAINTENANCE TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY • • • • Flight leg number Date and time when condition was first sensed Equipment ATA reference Each equipment that sensed the malfunction For each class 2 malfunction, the NVM saves the fault data that follows: Calibrated Air Speed (CAS) is more than 50 knots Aircraft is airborne The avionics systems are also monitored for internal faults by the CDS while the CAS is less than 50 kts. During taxiing or takeoff roll, excessive vibration or electrical power transients can cause the CDS to sense nuisance fault conditions. When the CAS goes more than 50 knots but less than 80 kts, the monitoring mode starts but only internal malfunctions are sensed by the CDS. When the airspeed goes more than 80 kts, internal and external malfunction conditions are then sensed. During the monitoring mode, the CDS does the functions that follow: • 50 in the last leg report 300 in the 63 previous legs report class 1 fault messages 50 maintenance report class 2 fault messages • • • Date and time when condition was first sensed Equipment ATA reference Each equipment that sensed the malfunction To decrease the number of no - fault found removals, fault messages show the cause of the fault. Consolidation logic is used to prevent a series of cascaded fault indications from a single malfunction. The ATA code related to each fault message is used for consolidation. The malfunctions are consolidated if they are class 1 faults with the same first four digits of the ATA number and they have the same malfunction cause. The malfunctions that relate to electrical power interruptions are also consolidated. If the bus voltage is less than 18V DC for more than 10 seconds, the last leg report and previous legs report will show a related message that follows: • • • • NO DATA FROM L MAIN BUS NO DATA FROM R MAIN BUS NO DATA FROM L ESS BUS NO DATA FROM R ESS BUS The Flight Data Processing Systems (FDPS1, FDPS2) supplies electrical bus data to the CDS. ATA 45 - ONBOARD MAINTENANCE SYSTEM Issue 6 - January 2023 Page 23 of 198 BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) CENTRAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM SYSTEM OPERATION MODES OF OPERATION CONTINUED MAINTENANCE MODE During the maintenance mode, one or the other ARCDU is used to do Initiated - BuiltIn-Tests (IBIT) and show the indications that follow: • • • Fault messages Type I and 2 LRU part numbers Avionics configuration Before the CDS sends a test command signal to a system, it makes sure that it receives valid data from the system. If not, the ARCDU shows a fault message and will not to continue with the test. If the system is in its Power-On Self Test (POST) mode, the ARCDU shows a SYSTEM BUSY message. The IBITs do not operate while the aircraft is airborne. The type 1 and 2 systems that can be requested by the CDS to do an IBIT have an interlock to prevent an IBIT when it is unsafe to do the test. These interlocks are needed because the CDS is certified as non-essential. The CDS operates in the maintenance mode when the conditions are sensed as follows: • • • • The aircraft is on the ground The Calibrated Air Speed (CAS) is less than 50 kts for more than 10 seconds The CDS GND MAINT toggle switch on maintenance panel is set The MAINT key on the ARCDU is pushed TO BE USED FOR MAINTENANCE TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY ATA 45 - ONBOARD MAINTENANCE SYSTEM Issue 6 - January 2023 Page 24 of 198 BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) CENTRAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM SYSTEM OPERATION MODES OF OPERATION CONTINUED TELELOADING New operational software serial data is supplied to the units. The unit does a software configuration check before the teleloading mode starts. It makes sure that the software version to be teleloaded is the same as the equipment part number. The unit restarts after a complete and successful teleload. It starts a complete PowerOn Self Test (POST) within 10 seconds. NOTE: The unit must be removed from the aircraft to receive a teleload. A CDS maintenance mode selection on one ARCDU causes the other ARCDU to be inactive. To let the maintenance personnel control the CDS, the ARCDU has the controls that follow: • • • DIM/RTN Key PREV Key NEXT Key DIM/RTN KEY When the ARCDU is operating in the maintenance mode, the DIM/RTN key is used to return to the main page. PREV KEY The PREV (Previous) key is used to make a previous CDS page selection. NEXT KEY The NEXT key is used to make a next CDS page selection. A RAM malfunction or PROM checksum are examples of internal malfunctions. Internal malfunctions are separated from sensor and external interface malfunctions. Sensors are LRUs in the avionics systems that cannot directly report to the CDS. A malfunctioned system selection from the AVIONICS STATUS report page causes the CDS to show that system main menu. Then, after a selection of an item, the CDS will transmit a data request discrete signal to the system to make it transmit its fault data. If no response is received by the CDS within 5 seconds, a SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE message is shown. If no malfunctions are sensed, a NO FAULT REPORTED message is shown on the AVIONICS STATUS report. If a response is received by the CDS but it is not correct, a SYSTEM ERROR-ABORTED message is shown at the bottom of the indication. If a malfunction that was sensed during the last leg or on ground condition is no longer present, and if its related system does not sense other internal malfunctions, the system status report is removed from the AVIONICS STATUS page.
