Minimal pairs: words that differ in only one phoneme among their sound constituents (e.g, pie-tie) Allophonic (phonetic) variations: Non-distinctive variant of the phoneme. Diacritic marks: marks added to sound transcription symbols in order to give them a particular phonetic value. Phonotactics: the description of the allowed combinations of phonemes in particular language.
