Plato’s metaphysics or view of reality, the things in this world are only copies of the original, the eternal and the true entities that can be found in the World of Forms. Reasons why Plato was deeply suspicious of arts and artists: Art appeals emotion rather than to the rational faculty of men (Emotion over Intelligence) Art imitates rather than lead one to reality (Imaginations and Imitations over Reality and Life- based) Socrates [Book: World of Forms] Art is just an Imitation of Imitation A painting is just an imitation of nature Art is just an imitation of reality in the World of forms Aristotle [Book: Poetics] Art as an aid to philosophy in revealing the truth. All kinds of art forms (poetry, music, dance, painting and sculpture) do not aim to represent reality. Aristotelian worldview. Art: allows for the experience of pleasure has an ability to be instructive and teach its audience things about life. Immanuel Kant [Book: Critique of Judgement] Art as disinterested judgement Considered the judgement of beauty, the cornerstone of art. It can be universal or subjective. Art is innately autonomous from specific interests Judgement of beauty is subjective. Subjective judgements are based on some universal criterion. Judgements are based when different faculties (brain, heart, physical body) are touched/used in making decisions 5. Art serves as language, a communication device that articulates feelings and emotions such as listening to music, watching an opera or reading a poem. Art is central to man’s existence because it makes accessible to feelings and emotions of people from the past, present and from time to time.
