Introduction to Art The Nature of art Art as creation - Ars (Latin) → “skill” - Techne (greek) → technology - Proficiency; perfection → Order - Skills and products primarily intended to delight the senses and produce a satisfying experience of the beautiful - Art is both the skill and the output - Art is a way of doing things → done w/ a profound sense of beauty - Art is not an accident, some things in the process can be accidental, but the intention to create is never accidental - We are art, God created us “Ex Nihilo” → out of nothing - Beautiful ← →delightful Aesthetics - From the Greek “aisthanomai” – perception - Coined by Alexander Baumgarten, early 18th Century - Field of knowledge gained by sensory experience combined with feelings - Branch of philosophy concerned with notions of the beautiful in works of art - Sets of principles/characteristics of what is considered beautiful in a particular time and place - Not simply something logical or cognitive – feeling (sense of pleasure) - It is empirical, you have to experience it Art as Expression and Communication - Ex. The Scream, Edvard Munch - Homages - the movie the scream, home alone etc. - Genius - talent - Milieu - political climate, when, where etc. Background - Illusion of depth and distance in 2D - splitting the flat area a. Background - Way up in the distance - Ex. the uneasy sky b. Middle ground - Space occuring between the background and foreground - Ex. body of water, people figure with hats, not tranquil merge of sky and water c. Foreground - Space nearest to you - Objects are bigger, closer to viewer (ex. Humanoid, lacks identifying characteristics like hair – could be anyone, eyes lack soul) Expressing vs. Communicating Expressing – one-way Communicating – two-way Koan - Zen riddle You matter only when someone is there to acknowledge you The Scream - the figure is screaming, the others do not care You look at the Literal level first, before you go up to the Figurative level of interpretation (Start with what you see) More analysis for the scream - The squiggly lines make it uneasy - Texture is rough - Intensity of colors - sunset and late afternoon - Red makes you alert, not relaxed - Life, mind, consciousness → emotional chaos - Squiggly lines indicate sound - noise → the sound travels but did not reach the people - Hidden ears Art - an internal manifesting in the external Spoliarium Analysis - An allegory - It’s an allegory because it points to something else - Allegory does not exist for its own sake - Chamber where gladiators are dumped, basement of a coliseum - Man is still alive – clenched fist → anger, allusion to the revolution - Weeping woman - green, different color contrast, symbol of life - 1884 - no revolution yet, prelude - Women - hope for the future, inang bayan, bansang lumuluha - Lack of respect for human dignity Levels of beauty Form and Substance Ugly - F>S Cute …. Sublime - F
