What does it mean to "critic" a piece? A lil guide so you don’t lose your mind by Habiba Abdellatif According to our textbook and the Professor's remarks, we have 3 steps:- 1-Read the piece. 2-Interpret the piece. 3-Give it a suitable analysis and criticize it. Reading the text will just mean reading it (duh) and making a mental note of 1 thing (where do I think this text came from?)…like was it taken from a novel? A drama? Or maybe it was taken from a poem? That's what we call the , where you try to guess where this text came from (if the text is in verse form -->the generic code is poetry OR you can say this text is taken from a poem/ the text has some sentences {like this and they describe character A moving around or looking a specific way} aka stage directions -->that taken from a drama/play and we say the generic code is drama/ and lastly if the text isn’t in verse form or doesn’t have any explanations of action--> then that’s taken from a novel and the generic code is a novel). Interpreting the piece is basically trying to find the "hidden meaning" or the message we understand from the text, so if i say (the reason I'm alive is gone) by gone I could mean left the room, the city, dead in general. And by the reason I could mean a person, I could me a hobby, a pet whatever, see how I can have multiple meanings from 1 sentence that’s interpreting, it's trying to understand the text even more and see any hidden or conveyed meanings, And we can say in our critic something like (it can told from the piece/text that there's a sad/happy/hopeful whatever tone to it and it's through the author's usage of verbs/adjectives/adverbs like "and here you insert words FROM THE TEXT PROVIDED and it's better to include multiple words just to be safe" and that's basically the linguistic code and how to interpret a piece. Now for the part that most people dread, the criticism, but don’t worry y'all I'm here to save your grades. Criticizing a piece means just to write how you think this text affected the public when the literary work was published, , and just like that you’ve deduced the which is giving an insight (using evidence from the text) on how society and the world was like aka what was the environment and the culture of the writer of this text like? BUT there's also a VERY IMPORTANT STEP TO ADD HERE and it's stating the school of thought this text followed, so in the previous example i talked about women and rights and all soooo I'd say something along the lines of and you have to phrase it like that to get the mark. SOOOOOO to recap:- While reading the piece we write the Generic code. While interpreting we write the Linguistic code. And during the final step we write the Cultural code AND the school of thought we think this text belonged to or followed.
