Robert Hooke The discovery of the cells began in 1660 when Robert Hooke examined a cork sample under his own microscope. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek Leeuwenhoek created a microscope with higher magnification and discovered bacteria for the first time in 1676. Robert Brown In 1831, Robert Brown is the first person to discover the nucleus of the cell. Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell Cell membrane It serves as the skin of the cell that controls the entrance or exit of substances in a cell. Nucleus It is considered the control center of the cell. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) It is an interconnected membrane system that works as transport network. Ribosome Ribosomes are not membrane-bound. They play an important role in synthesizing essential proteins. Ribosomes Vacuole It stores water and food. It is bigger in plant cells for storage of water. Mitochondrion It is a double-membrane organelle that is called the powerhouse of the cell. Golgi apparatus It is the packaging center of the cell. Chloroplast It is the site for photosynthesis. Cell wall The cell wall is found outside the cell membrane to prevent excessive loss of water. Plasmodesmat a Enables transport and communication between plant cells. Centriole Centrioles are cylindrical in shape and they play an important role in organizing the tubules to maintain the shape of the cell.
