Welcome Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry Department !Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible Sources of Hazards in our lab Chemical: acids, alkalies, toxic chemicals Radiological: radioactive waste disposal Fire Electrical accidents A- General Safety Rules Safety Goggles must be always -1.worn.Always wear a lab coat -2 Work is permitted only during the -3.scheduled laboratory period A- General Safety Rules You must read instructions.4 carefully before attempting to do anything and keep your notes with you when doing tests or.experiments Follow all written and verbal.5.instructions carefully Remember that the lab is a.6 !place for serious work Careless behavior or playing practical jokes may endanger yourself and others and will not !be tolerated A- General Safety Rules 7- Come to laboratory periods on time and mentally prepared by studying the experiment and planning your activities. 8- Be prepared physically; for example, don't try to do lab work on an empty stomach, or without sleep. 9- Write everything you do and see in your notebook so that you can 10- No food, drinks, or smoking are allowed. 11- Shoes must be worn, no bare feet or open sandals are allowed. B- Chemical Safety  Read and reread labels carefully to make sure that you are using the right chemical.  Know the hazards of the materials being used.  Pay attention to the warning signs about the chemicals used in the lab. Hazard Warning Symbols B- Chemical Safety Most organic substances are hazardous to health; so, avoid breathing and skin contact as much as possible. Do not smell any chemicals directly! Avoid contact of chemicals with skin The use of rubber gloves is recommended. B- Chemical Safety Smell chemicals only if your lab instructor specifically tells you to do so, then use your hand to.fan the vapor to your nose Never smell chemicals. To prevent inhalation of organic and inorganic vapors, do your experiments in the fume hood. Most organic solvents are flammable, so never heat a flammable substance with a direct flame. A hot water bath or a hot plate is used instead. hot water bath hot plate B- Chemical Safety Open Flames.First, light the match THEN !Turn on the gas B- Chemical Safety Open Flames Tie back long hair and loose clothes when working with open flames.. Never heat a closed system. Never look into a container as you are heating it. Never leave a heat source unattended. B- Chemical Safety.Heat test tubes at an angle -1 Point the test tube away -2 from you and others while heating, they can boil suddenly and spurt hot.liquid Handle hot glassware -3 with gloves or beaker.tongs B- Chemical Safety Small fires may be extinguished by covering with a :. A book or larger container. Fire Blanket.. Fire extinguisher. B- Chemical Safety Do not pipet solutions by !mouth Use a rubber suction bulb or other devices to.fill a pippet B- Chemical Safety.Know the safety equipment Eye wash fountain Safety shower Fire extinguisher Emergency exits B- Chemical Safety keep the instrument room clean and free of paper. Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the lab. This rule applies even if you have been wearing gloves! C- Glassware Safety Do not use broken or cracked glassware. Glassware with unpolished ends is a hazard since it can cause serious cuts. The glassware used should be clean and dry. Dirty glassware should be cleaned with water and soap, and the glassware should be brushed. C- Glassware Safety Never use a thermometer as a stirrer! If a mercury thermometer breaks, immediately contact the laboratory instructor and restrict access to the area of contamination until cleanup can be arranged. Do not use a glass rod as a stirrer. C- Glassware Safety Do not place hot glassware in.cold water Rapid cooling may make it.shatter Bottles should never be grasped by the neck but should be held firmly around the body. Labels and equipment instructions must be read carefully before use. D- Electrical Safety Lay electrical cords where no.1 one can trip on them or get.caught in them Be sure your hands and your.2 lab area are dry before using.electrical equipment Never poke anything into.3.electrical outlets Unplug cords by pulling the.4.plug and not the cord Unplug all electrical.5 equipment at the end of the lab First aids in laboratory Burns Immediately flush with cold water until the.burning sensation is lessened wounds Do not touch an open wound without safety gloves. Pressing directly on minor cuts will stop bleeding in a.few minutes Fainting Provide fresh air and have the person recline so.that their head is lower than the rest of their body The eyes Flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for several minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in.the eye, do not rub the eye What’s Wrong With This ?Picture Glassware Accurate Rough Burette Beaker Volumetric Conical flask pipette Measure Volumetric Graduated flask pipette Burette Stan d Tap Pipette Volumetric Graduat pipette with( ed )bulb - Extremely accurate - Not as precise as - Measurements are volumetric pipettes. fixed and are specific - Volume delivered to the individual varies. volumetric pipette.
