JH2224 Advanced Techniques in MS Paint In the last meeting, we discussed the user interface and tools found in MS Paint. You have also tried some of the tools to create some pieces of artwork of your own using this software. In this module, you will learn about some of the more nuanced techniques in this software. Image Selection and Manipulation Image selection in MS Paint requires using the “Select” tool in the “Home” tab. Clicking the tool highlights it. Clicking the dropdown box below the tool opens more options for the Select tool. Shown below are the options found in the tool. OPTION DESCRIPTION Allows you to select items in the image (or canvas) Rectangular selection within a defined rectangular boundary. It results in a selection enclosed in an invisible rectangular border. Allows you to select items in the image (or canvas) Free-form selection using a pen-like tool. It results in a selection based on your mouse movements, resulting in unique selections. Select all Allows you to select the entire image (or canvas). Inverts the selection border, allowing you to select the Invert selection image outside the selection. Removes the selection off the canvas. The “Undo” Delete button restores it. Allows you to select the section that has no contact with the canvas. Usually, a selection involves the selected Transparent selection image and some pieces of the canvas. Highlighting this option “removes” the canvas from the selection. Image selection is also present every time you copy an image from an external source (such as a web browser or another open MS Paint project) and paste it into your current project as a new layer. The “layer” function in MS Paint is not the same as the “layer” function found in modern- day image-editing software. As stated in the previous module, anything added to MS Paint’s canvas is considered a new “layer” that is compressed once another object is added. The layer 03 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 1 of 6 JH2224 is still viable for manipulation as long as the selection (or object) is not deselected. Shown below are the various image manipulation tools affecting the base image. It will open the Image Properties window, shown below. 03 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 3 of 6 JH2224 You can also do the following: Pressing “Ctrl” + “E” on the keyboard; or Dragging the canvas points, also known as the little white dots found outside the canvas (refer to the image below). Users can also create an effect that looks like a crude motion “blur.” This is achieved by holding “Shift” and “Alt” on the keyboard while dragging the selected object (or selection). It creates duplicate images that follow the mouse cursor, effectively creating a “motion blur.” Source: https://valorant.fandom.com/wiki/Sprays 03 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 4 of 6 JH2224 Color Gradient Creation With the introduction of Microsoft Windows XP, MS Paint gained the capability of creating gradients, degrees of inclinations that, when applied in images and graphics, demonstrate the gradual change and blend of colors found in the system. This feature opened up possibilities of generating more colors and even more creative approaches in digital art. It is done by using only the Resize tool. Below is an example of a gradient made in MS Paint 10, using seven (7) colors. This additional feature has allowed some digital works such as the one below (with some editing done in MS Word). 03 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 5 of 6 JH2224 Gradients also allow users to create cascading effects inside texts, as shown below. The gradient is made of two (2) colors only. Perfect Shaping Creating shapes is easy; creating perfect forms is challenging. For example, a user wants to make a square using the rectangle tool. Unfortunately, what the user perceived as a square turned out to be a rectangle. Figure 1. The left quadrilateral is a user-made rectangle, as compared to the perfect square at right Fortunately, MS Paint allows users to create perfect shapes easily. Holding the “Shift” button on the keyboard will enable you to drag the shape tool to create perfectly straight lines and polygons. REFERENCES: BeingNandish (2020).
