HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: ADMINISTRATIVE – 010 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Education and Documentation for Advanced Revision: Technician Firefighter Certification 4 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2024 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE POLICY The intent of this policy is to provide a system to assist Department personnel with becoming certified at the OSFM's Advanced Technician Firefighter level. All Department personnel hired must become certified at the Advanced Technician Firefighter level within five (5) years of employment. The Advanced Technician Firefighter education program established by the Training Division placed the responsibility on each Firefighter to complete independent study and study guide exams with the assistance of the Department's officers and the Training Division. Non-Advanced Technician Firefighter personnel need only complete this education process for the subject areas that they have not completed, as of the effective date of this order. PROCEDURE A. The Department Training Division is responsible to provide the personnel noted above with the following: 1. Dates and locations of all Advanced Technician Firefighter exams as provided by the OSFM will be made through the Training Officer. 2. Study logs and study materials for each of the subject areas relating to Advanced Technician Firefighter education. The study logs will provide the reading assignments relating to each subject area, as provided by the OSFM. All completed study logs will be placed in the Firefighter's training file. 2. A full set of IFSTA manuals (located at each station for the individual's use.) 4. To provide the training on the required practical skills in order to fulfill the OSFM requirements to obtain certification. 1 B. Company Officers are responsible for the following: 1. To document Advanced Technician Firefighter level independent study on the Advanced Technician Firefighter training report for all personnel assigned to their company. 2. To assist the non-certified Advanced Technician Firefighter personnel with their independent study. C. Non-Advanced Technician Firefighter certified personnel are responsible for the following: 1. To complete an independent study program with the assistance of their Company Officer. All subject areas must be completed prior to the Firefighter taking the Advanced Technician Firefighter exams. 2. To complete study log for each subject area completed through independent study and to show his/her Company Officer the completed log on a regular basis. (This allows the Company Officer to document this training on the Advanced Technician Firefighter Training Report.) 3. Once all areas have been completed, the Firefighter will take the corresponding OSFM’s Advanced Technician Firefighter exam.
