Extended Learning Unit 9 My Extended Learning Submission for Unit #8 DATE Agosto 10, 2023 TIME SPENT (hours; minutes) 60 min WHAT I DID (Story titles, etc.) Studied / read “Una mala idea” (A bad idea). SUMMARY AND REFLECTIONS (summary of the story and notes/thoughts about my work, ONE story, ONE report). The story is about Sofia who stops by Mateo’s apartment to see if he can go with her to see a Superhero movie about a bad robot that is trying to create more bad robots. He says he wants to go, but that he has his job in a hotel where he needs to clean 4 more rooms and 4 more bathrooms. He also needs to practice his violin for an hour. Sofia offers to help Mateo clean. They clean the rooms from top to bottom but realize that if Mateo practices his violin for one hour, they’ll be late for the movie. Instead, Mateo plays violin music from his laptop in his room, so his parents will think he’s practicing, and they bike to the movie theater. After buying the tickets, Mateo sees his parents. They have discovered the laptop playing music in his room and have come to bring him home. He can’t see the move and his punishment is to wash the dishes in the cafe that night and work in the garden. Mateo realizes that his plan was a bad idea. New vocabulary for me: “idea” (idea), “superheroes” (superheros), “juntos” (together), “pared” (wall), “tan” (so), “pensarán” (they will think”, “creo” (believe), “esperándolos” (waiting for them), “sonaba” (sounded), “deshonesto” (dishonest), “castigo” (punishment), Vocabulary reminder: “podía” (could), “abajo” (below), “sonriendo” (smiling), “una vez” (once), “enojar” (anger), Agosto 45 min 12, 2023 Studied / read “Flores para mi madre” (Flowers for my mother). Today is the narrator’s 35th birthday. Every year on her birthday, she goes to her parents’ house and gives flowers to her mother since it's winter and there are no flowers growing in the garden. She likes to do this to thank her mother for being the best mother a daughter could have. Her parents live in a faraway town. They didn’t go to college and when they first arrived in the city, her dad fixed cars and her mom cleaned houses. When she was a young girl, her mother would clean large houses and cook for the families. In the evenings, she was tired, but happy that her daughters could go to school. She would help them study. She told her daughters that when they grow up, they can be teachers and doctors and that she will be able to be with her flowers in the garden. Today, the narrator is a history teacher at a college and her parents are retired. On her birthday, her mom cooks her favorite foods. New vocabulary for me: “pueblo” (town), “cansada” tired. Vocabulary reminder: “encimera” (worktop / countertop). Agosto 60 min 16, 2023 Studied / read – “Un año en Valparaíso” (A year in Valparaiso). The author (Paloma) writes Maria a letter. She says that she’s very happy because she’s looking forward to Maria coming to live with her for a year in Valparaiso where she can show her the city and they can go to college together. Valparaiso is near the sea and a few minutes from Viña del Mar, a city with many beaches and gardens. It’s going to be summer when she arrives with lots of sun and no rain. In February, they’ll go to a concert in Viña del Mar. In Autumn, they’ll walk to college and cafes, but if they need to take buses, they are cheaper for students. Valparaiso has many steep hills, so there are elevators that can take people up and down. In the winter, they’ll be able to go visit the house of Pablo Neruda, a famous Chilean writer. In the Spring, they can go visit the city of Santiago, and visit the mountains and the island of Cachagua. At the end of the letter, she says that she awaits Maria’s flight schedule, and signs it “Un beso” (a kiss. New vocabulary for me: “querida” (dear), “ya” (already / yet), “mar” (sea), “unos minutos” (a few minutes), “ascensores” (elevators), “pingüinos” (penguins). Vocabulary reminder: “países” (countries), “baratos” (cheaper), “obras” (plays). Reflection: Reviewing these stories added some valuable new vocabulary. Specifically, the use of “ya”.
