Flames in the Forest ADDITIONAL NOTES 1. How did the weather worsen the fire? Ans: It was a hot and dusty afternoon in the middle of May. It had not rained for several weeks. The grass had turned completely brown and the leaves were covered with dust. The wind was strong and it worsened the forest fire which spread fast. 2. Why was Romi in a hurry to get home? Ans: Romi was in a hurry to get home because his father was not well. The doctor had given him some medicines which he had to take to his father. Even after knowing that there was a forest fire spreading he decided to go home peddling through the forest. 3. What was the effect of the forest fire on different animals? Ans: Hares were leaping across the path, monkeys ran chattering Commented [FS1]: Change made across the road excitedly. Even smaller birds- parrots, jungle crows, magpies, and owls were coming out of their bushes and nests with their cries. 4. What kind of boy was Romi? Ans: Romi was a risk taker and a caring person. He took the risk of going home in spite of the opportunity he had to stay at his friend’s place. He helped Teju whom he did not know very well, thinking that he could not leave a small child alone in danger. 5. What brought Romi and Teju closer? Ans. Romi did not know Teju very well before. But the fact that both were able to cross all hurdles together and move out of the burning forest to safety is evident that Romi and Teju became closer. 6. ‘Nature is the biggest treasure for human beings’. Explain this statement with reference to the lesson. Ans: Ruskin Bond is famous as a Nature writer. Almost all his stories have the hilly terrain of India with its lush green forests as the back drop. The lesson ‘Flames in the Forest’ is an extraordinary account of a young boy of eleven years, Romi, raging through a forest fire. Being a loyal and responsible boy, Romi risks his life to be able to reach home and deliver the medicines to his father. On the way he experiences the sorry plight of hundreds of wild animals who have been rendered homeless by the fire. The panic stricken animals are running helter-skelter in search of refuge. The forest fire destroys the flora and fauna due to which animal species get endangered. However, human beings depend on nature for survival. Hence, conservation of forest becomes the top most priority. Thus, we can conclude that nature is the greatest treasure for human begins and it is our duty to save Mother Earth and preserve it for the future generation.
