# Bindevæv ## The Three 'Round' Connective Tissue Cells Without Processes - **Fat cell (D):** The fat cell is a large cell with a nucleus and cytoplasm at the periphery. It is filled with fat and is found in all body tissues where it dominates, it forms adipose tissue. The diagram shows its nucleus at the top of the cell. The fat cell is round because it is isolated. When fat cells are clustered together, they become flattened. - **Plasma cell (F):** The plasma cell is an anti-body producing cell, which develops from a lymphocyte. It is characterized by a round nucleus situated at the periphery of the cell and a more coarsely granular cytoplasm. The plasma cell has been known to be important in antibodies production. - **Mast cell (E):** Mast cells, when activated, release substances, giving them an important role in the body's defence system. ## Lymphocytes and Granulocytes - **Lymphocytes (1) (2):** Lymphocytes are a very important part of the body's immune system. They are activated, increasing their production of antibodies, which develop into the larger plasma cells. - **Granulocytes (1) (2):** Granulocytes are phagocytic cells, their role is similar to the macrophages but smaller. ## The Reticular Connective Tissue - **Reticulum cells (1):** They are the most important cells in the reticular connective tissue. They are star-shaped and communicate with each other via anastomoses. Other cells, such as lymphocytes, are found in the tissue. Reticular tissue occurs in the lymph nodes and in the bone marrow. ## Cartilage - **Cartilage:** Cartilage is a supportive tissue. It consists of cells and matrix. The matrix is composed of fibers and ground substance. There are three types of cartilage: - **Hyaline cartilage** - **Elastic cartilage** - **Fibrocartilage**
