Make connections between the 21st century learning skills to authentic assessment Learning Outcomes Refresh! Assessment of Learning Assessment of learning focuses on the development and utilization of assessment tools to improve the teaching-learning process. Teachers need to find out if the learners are actually learning as a result of teaching. Teachers need to find out if there are changes on learners’ behavior related to personality, social skills, interests, learning styles, among others. This will show us whether the teaching has been effective, which is ultimately the most important issue. This requires AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT Student centered Application Meaningful learning Real life/world Performance Demonstration Output/Product Portfolio Evidences Skills Tasks Roles Challenges Affective Attitude Behavior Interest Communication Subjective Rubric/Criteria Critical Thinking Creativity Collaboration Authentic Assessment “… results in a product or presentation that has meaning or value beyond success in school.” (Wiggins, 2006, p. 51). “…emphasize(s) connections between assessment, learning and real-world issues.” (Green, 1998, p. 11). “Performance is assessed in a context more like that encountered in real life…” (Dez, Moon & Meyer, 1992, p.38-39). The Contrast between Traditional Assessment and Authentic Assessment The Four C’s of 21st Century Learning Skills Examples of Tasks According to their Authenticity Example 1 –Makabayan Somewhat Authentic: Ipaliwanag ang mga dapat mong gawin para makatulong sa paglutas ng mga suliranin ng bansa (suliranin sa basura). Examples of Tasks According to their Authenticity Example 2 –Communication Arts Somewhat Authentic: Read then summarize the story of “The Turtle and the Monkey”. Then write the lesson that you have learned from it. Authentic: Read any story you want. Summarize it and then write the lesson that you have learned from it. Very Authentic: Write your most memorable experience and indicate the lesson that you have learned from it. Examples of Tasks According to their Authenticity Example 3 –Mathematics Somewhat Authentic: Solve word problems involving addition. Authentic: Given is an addition sentence, construct a word problem out of it then solve it. Very Authentic: Construct a word problem on addition that you encountered in real life and show your solution to this problem. Examples of Tasks According to their Authenticity Example 4 –Science Somewhat Authentic: Explain the steps when manipulating the microscope in examining the body parts of a tiny animal. Authentic: Demonstrate how to use the microscope in examining the body parts of a tiny animal. Very Authentic: Get any specimen and examine this using the microscope. Examples of Tasks According to their Authenticity Example 5 –Professional Education Students Less Authentic: Do an oral presentation of the process in developing and validating a cognitive test. Authentic: Critique an existing test instrument in terms of its validity and reliability. More Authentic: Develop a valid and reliable instrument and administer it to the target users. Examples of Tasks According to their Authenticity Example 6 –Administrators Less Authentic: Make a program proposal on a given topic following the format given. Authentic: Make a program proposal to address an expressed need for submission and oral defense. More Authentic: Implement a personally designed – program to address an expressed need then evaluate the results. Assignment Prepare on the following questions/tasks in our synchronous meeting. 1.
