HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: SPECIALIZED OPERATION - 008 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Carbon Monoxide Emergency Activation Revision: 2 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2025 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE The Fire Department is responsible for investigating a reported carbon monoxide problem. As part of our response, we are not there to repair the problem with the heating or cooking equipment. Specifically, we are to render emergency medical care, to assist occupants with exiting the building, to evaluate existing levels of carbon monoxide, and advise the occupant(s) of our findings by issuing a Notice of Findings Form. POLICY PROCEDURE With an activated CO detector or occupants complaining of signs and symptoms of CO poisoning, the following activities are to be completed: A. Enter the involved structure wearing full protective clothing and SCBAs, and with an atmospheric meter. PERSONNEL ARE TO FULLY DON AND OPERATE THEIR SCBAs AND PASS DEVICES IF READINGS OF 35 PPM OR GREATER ARE FOUND. B. Atmospheric readings are to be taken outside of the building, immediately upon entering the affected area, and in all appropriate rooms (i.e., utility, kitchen, and furnace). C. Once the CO readings have been determined, deal with the CO levels according to the Notice of Findings Form and according to the following: 1 1. 10 ppm or greater a. Evacuate occupants (in affected area) to a safe area of the structure, outside the structure, or to an ambulance. b. Medically evaluate and assess all proximate occupants. c. Ventilate the affected area. d. Advise the occupant to call a licensed contractor of their choice. 2. 35 ppm or greater a. In addition to the actions shown above, notify Village Code Enforcement. D. Complete a Notice of Findings Form Fire Administration will email a copy to the residence. A paper copy is only available if the resident does not have email.
