Order of the Scientific Method (5 Steps) 1. Observation 2. Hypothesis 3. Experiment 4. Analyze Data 5. Conclusion Variables: - Independent Variable: The variable that is changed or controlled in an experiment. (In your control.) - Dependent Variable: The variable that is measured and affected in the experiment. (Not in your control.) Groups: - Control Group: The group that does not receive the experimental treatment, used for comparison. - Experimental Group(s): The group(s) that receive the experimental treatment. Scientific Concepts - Scientific Theory: A proposed explanation of an aspect of the natural world. - Scientific Law: A statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes an aspect of the natural world. - Scientific Theories -> Scientific Laws Basic Needs for Life - Water - Air - Shelter - Food Categories of Living Things: - Producers: Organisms that produce their own food (e.g., plants). - Herbivores: Organisms that eat plants. - Omnivores: Organisms that eat both plants and animals. - Carnivores: Organisms that eat meat. - Decomposers: Organisms that break down dead matter. Flow of Energy: Energy flows through an ecosystem from the sun, to producers, to various consumer levels, and eventually to decomposers. Molecules: 1. Proteins (Amino Acids): - Form structures and allow cells to function. - Different shapes perform different jobs. 2. Carbohydrates (Sugars): - Provide energy to living things. - End in “-ose.” - Include simple and complex carbohydrates (complex are composed of hundreds of sugar molecules). 3. Lipids (Fats): - Not soluble in water. - Serve as energy storage and insulation. 4. Nucleic Acids (Nucleotides): - Contain the information needed for cells to synthesize proteins. - Include DNA and RNA. 5. ATP: - The primary energy-carrying molecule. - Delivers energy to cells for various functions.
