Summary

This document describes the global distribution of rainforests and deserts, explaining the factors that contribute to their locations. Rainforests are primarily found in tropical regions due to high temperatures and abundant rainfall. Deserts, on the other hand, are located in subtropical areas where sinking air leads to reduced condensation and minimal rainfall.

1. Describe the global distribution of rainforests and the reasons behind it. The global distribution of rainforests is primarily within the tropics. These regions are characterized by high temperatures that cause the air to warm and rise, creating an Equatorial Low-Pressure Belt. As the warm air rises, it cools down, leading to increased condensation and significant levels of precipitation. This high amount of rainfall is a defining characteristic of rainforests, contributing to their thick vegetation. 2. Describe the global distribution of deserts and the reasons behind it. The global distribution of deserts is primarily within the subtropics. As the air rises at the equator, it moves towards the poles. Around 30° North and 30° South, the air becomes cool enough and sinks back onto the ground surface, creating subtropical high-pressure belts. Cold sinking air leads to decreased condensation and minimal levels of precipitation. This low amount of rainfall is a defining characteristic of deserts, contributing to their sparse vegetation.
