Geography Department 5.1 USING THE WIND Lesson Notes How are winds formed? Winds blow because the Sun warms up different parts of the sea and land by different amounts. The warmer parts of the Earth’s surface warm the air above them. The warmer air is lighter than the surrounding air, so it rises. In other places the air cooled and becomes heavier, so it sinks.
