STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS OF PLANT CELL MERISTEMATIC TISSUE Meristems are made up of embryonic tissues called meristematic tissues. APICAL MERISTEM  Apical meristems are responsible for the primary growth of plants.  The blue parts represent the location of the apical meristem. LATERAL MERISTEM  Lateral meristems are responsible for the secondary growth of plants.  The red parts represent the location of the lateral meristem. PERMANENT TISSUES  Permanent tissue in plants consists of cells that have stopped dividing and are specialized for specific functions.  These tissues form the different parts of the plant, like leaves, stems, and roots, and help with tasks such as support, transport, and storage. PERMANENT TISSUES Permanent tissues are further divided into surface, fundamental and vascular. SURFACE TISSUES Surface tissues cover and protect the surface of different plant organs. FUNDAMENTAL TISSUES Fundamental tissues form the main bulk of plants. They fill most of the spaces in any plant organ. VASCULAR TISSUES  Are complex conducting tissues that extend from roots to the leaves of plants.  There are two types of vascular tissues: xylem and phloem XYLEM  Xylem is the part of the plant that mostly consists of dead cells when they are mature.  It is the vascular tissue of plants responsible for transporting water and dissolved minerals throughout the plant. PHLOEM Phloem is the part of the plant made of living cells that carries food (like sugars) from the leaves to other parts of the plant. LEAVES Leaves are chief organs of plants for photosynthesis. STEM A stem is an above ground structure that support the leaves, transport water and important nutrients between roots and leaves, and produces new tissues for growth. LET’S SUM IT UP! Plants have two major tissues, namely meristematic and permanent tissues.  Meristematic tissues give rise to permanent tissues which will differentiate into specialized cells with certain functions.  Permanent tissues are generally responsible for photosynthesis, support, and transport of water and nutrients LET’S SUM IT UP! Apical and lateral meristems are responsible for primary and secondary growth, respectively.  Primary growth is an increase in plant’s height.  Secondary growth is an increase in plant’s diameter and girth.
